That is an Assault Post. We should go ahead and coin that along with Assault Statement for the SJW's every time they get triggered.

The problem is ignorance. If you believe this type of weapon is either readily available or used in these types of crimes, you're ignorant. Your posting of it here implies that you believe this.

Fully automatic weapons are heavily regulated and almost never used in crimes. Statistically zero. Your odds of getting killed by a legally owned, Class III, fully automatic weapon in the U.S. (unless wielded by a cop, of course) are about the same as getting hit by a meteor and a bolt of lighting at the same time.

Assault weapons' menacing looks, coupled with the public's confusion over fully-automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons --anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun-- can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons.

I don't think he was implying that at all.

I do agree that it seems the general public doesn't know that Class 3 firearms are not readily available to just any Tom, Dick, and Ahkmed.

10-4 Understood. Had his post not been in all caps that is probably how I would have taken it. Since it was all in caps, it was taken as though he wanted to get an extreme point across but that point was wrong.

This seems to be splitting hairs to me....

Except that it's not. By definition for a rifle to be an "assault rifle" it has to have selective fire capability. To call an AR-15 an assault rifle is like calling a go-cart down at the local track a NASCAR simply because it's painted to looked like Jr's car. Unless a rifle has selective fire capability, it's not an assault rife, even if it's designed to look like one.

I've never really understood why gun fanboys get their panties in a wad whenever the press says assault rifle when explaining a store bought AR and/or AK... To the common man on the street said rifles are indeed assault rifles. Just seems like a really stupid thing to get hung up on.

No, it's not a stupid thing to get hung up on because there is a HUGE difference between an actual assault rifle and a semi-automatic rifle that looks like one but does not function like one.

This is an assault rifle....

It can fire in either semi-automatic mode or, depending on the version can fire in 3 round burst or fully automatic mode.

This is a semi-automatic rifle built to LOOK like an assault rifle.

It can only fire one round each time the trigger is depressed. Before it can fire another round the trigger must be released and then depressed again. This rifle functions in the exact same way as this rifle....

Well, I am no gun fanboy, but can understand why. It is because the conversation about guns gets derailed by them. This is because of ignorance on the topic by the media, which the OP (or pic posted in OP) is trying to point out.

Every time there is a shooting incident, the talking heads always seem to bring up the point that "there is no reason for a person to own a fully automatic assualt rifle." Since these types of guns have a certain look, they are pretty much all labled as AR's, which people treat synonymously with "Assualt Rifle." So naturally, people shift the conversation to Fully Auto's and how they shouldn't be legal.

As pointed out on this board, (legal) fully auto's are in a finite supply, and are typically prohibitively expensive, especially considering the quality/age of the firearm.

So what I am trying to say, is that this conversation always seems to get shifted to fully auto guns, which are just not a huge threat in civilian crime in this country. The "AR's" that you see are not much different than most rifles, other than how they look, and of course magazine capacity, which is also regulated. There just isn't much that you could do with one of these weapons that you couldn't do with a weapon made for hunting or personal protection.

So the bottom line is that "fanboys" are likely the ones that see no real difference in these guns than any other guns, so there is no real reason to single them out.

Spoken like someone who doesn't understand it. The whole point is pushing back on the idea that a gun that looks a certain way is not equivalent to the gun miliataries use.

Only in some jurisdictions. Practical concerns and engineering are the only limits on magazine capacity in most places. And that's how it should be. I want as flexible and reliable response available in the unfortunate eventuality I will have to defend myself and my own, period. Any artificial limit on my ability to do so (ugly gun ban, magazine limit) that does not also apply to law enforcement (we face the same threats they do) is tyranny, period.

But an AR can be converted to full auto, correct?
When Armelite, then Colt, first manufactured the AR15, it had a select fire system, full auto, semi and safe. When the US Govt made it the infantry weapon of choice and renamed it M16, Colt then began producing the civilian AR-15, which only had semi-auto capabilities.

But to answer your question, a civilian model AR15 can be made to fire full-auto by adding a couple of pieces, mainly an auto sear.

Like I said, I'm not exactly a fanboy, so all of that in my post is just my understanding of the conversation.

I am of the mind that if you want to hurt someone, you can find a way to hurt them, regardless of how many bullets your gun can hold, or if you even have one.

Once man discovered fire, the means of using it for destruction have only been limited by imagination.

By ban do you mean make it federal law to be damn near impossible to own one, because that already exists.

And for those that buy bump stocks it's technically not a single trigger pull.

Most people don't know that the AR's and AK's available to the public for purchase are not actually assault rifles. To be a true assault rifle, it has to have selective fire.

Generally, the media and liberals do not let long held facts, definitions and standards get in the way of promoting an agenda.

It's stupid to get hung up on it until legislation starts being prepared using it as the basis of the guidelines. If Hilary is elected, you are going to see a major push from the white house to start new gun legislation. Now that there is a liberal majority on the SCotUS, you are going to see some seriously retarded anti-2nd amendment rulings on wording that people with a 3rd grade education can tell you the meaning of. The only thing giving even a glimmer of hope is that the right currently owns the legislative branch, but with a liberal ownership of the other 2 branches, its going to hard to hold it back, especially with this trend of executive orders consisting of more than just earthquake preparedness the past few presidencies. And if a executive order goes 30 days without being challenged by congress, it becomes law.

No, there is no splitting hairs and there is nothing stupid to get hung up on. It's a very serious distinction that as long as the media keeps blurring and muddying, will gain public traction and when it comes time to put into writing the guidelines on new legislation, it will make an ENORMOUS difference.

nah, if the muzzle brake/flash hider is permanently attached, which on most ar's now days they are for this exact reason, then it is considered part of the barrel length. My shortest AR is about that size and its a good inch and a half over the minimum
