Johnson & Johnson has for decades known its raw talc and finished powders at times tested positive for small quantities of asbestos, with the company's doctors and lawyers vexed by the findings but failing to alert regulators or consumers, according to a Reuters story published Friday.

J&J stock -- up 6 percent for the year -- plunged 11 percent on news of the report, based on memos, internal documents and confidential memos that the maker of Johnson's Baby Powder had been compelled to share with attorneys for some 11,700 plaintiffs who claim the company's powder products caused their cancers. The cases include thousands of women with ovarian cancer.

Any exposure to asbestos is a health risk, according to the World Health Organization and other medical groups.

Ovarian cancer rate study showed women had an astronomically high rate of ovarian cancer within 48 months after giving birth.

I've used baby powder after every shower for probably 20 years and haven't had a single issue with ovarian cancer. Women love the way I smell.

To my knowledge, there is no pier-reviewed link from asbestos fibers to ovarian cancer.

Now if mesothelioma or asbestosis were noted, I could easily see the connection.

I wonder if claim is that powder was so fine that fibers abosrbed into mucus membranes near the anus.

There is no way they can know that the powder caused the cancer. That's ridiculous. Stupid jury. Now everyone with ovarian cancer can claim its from powder? Who hasn't used talcum powder? I suppose any cancer I may come down with I can blame on either Round Up or baby powder.

The opposing viewpoint by the company provided in the article sounds plausible as well.
