the LSU was rec was a shite hole. The ghetto YMCA off of government was a better gym

LSU redid it and that included a lazy river.

Then it became an easy target for Bernie types even though it costs students less than $700 poli-sci book they are forced to buy and they might actually use it.

He went as hard on student loan forgiveness as his wife's boyfriend goes on her.

Or that a study was done at the time and found LSU's student experience was ranked near dead last in the SEC, hence the UREC upgrades.

Exactly. Need to attract those out of state students! As a Louisiana resident I always trust whoever commissions a “study”.

The video is pretty good. But that part about principal versus interest on a loan early in the repayment phase is misleading.

it's like nobody taught them about loan amortization. Every loan is structured like that.

No one wants to talk about the exorbitant amount of bloat every public university has gone through since "everyone" can get student loans for college.

John Oliver's show was fanfrickingtastic before Donald Trump became President. It was a pretty hard hitting investigative journalism show. The topics were all over the board and generally unbiased politically or didn't involve politics at all.

Trump broke him.

He couldn't talk about anything else for years and still can't let it go that people support Trump. He was absolutely mindfricked by Donald J. Trump. He has bright spots every now and then where he forgets about 45, but it always boils back up to the surface.

You are absolutely mindfricked by any criticism of Donald Trump. It appears to be a debilitating condition. Oliver has always done politics.

LSU student body voted on the expansion and then paid for it through and increase in our fee bill from $135/semester to $200/semester for a really nice facility.

So 18 y/o students (who have a great reputation for good decisions)chose something that then cost them more, then had to take out loans to cover it, then complain that loans should be forgiven. Sorry, it's bullshite. We have so many fees that are unnecessary. I realize this one increase was small, but it all adds up. The reality is we should be focusing on getting a good education in legitimate fields and retaining those educated people in Louisiana to grow the economy. Instead we dangle shiny things in front of students, make them pay for it, then they move to Texas to get a good job to cover it. Priorities are f**ked up and if you deny it, you are blind and will continue to deal with the horrid performance of the state. And how I wish it were different. Wife and I are both grads but have no intention of sending our kids there.

ME?!

I think you have me confused with someone else

ETA:

I criticize Trump all the time (and Biden). I just have Trump exhaustion with the media and shows like Oliver's. I want to learn about the black market rhino horn trade or the predatory payday loan industry or the unconstitutional practice of Civil Asset Forfeiture, not Trump's latest comments or escapades.

Same shite happened with 60 Minutes. For years it seemed like 2/3 topics a weekend were Trump focused in some way. Just tired of the subject.

Since we've been told that student loans are so burdensome and predatory on our yutes, why not eliminate them altogether?

And for the prospective borrowers, knowing that the government will eventually bail you out isn’t going to convince to be more cautious about borrowing. And as for these loan companies, knowing the government is going to bail out all these bad loans is only going to embolden them to write more loans that are even higher and less likely to be repaid.

Louisiana would be so much better off to tie tops into an in state job requirement. Im someone that took advantage of tops and then dipped but if there had been a requirement to stay in state for 2/3 years or i had to pay the money back you best believe I wouldve stayed those 2/3 years (and likely longer honestly).

Same. Between the wife and I, you had an Engineerig degree and MBA leave. Wife didn't want to at first. Now she wouldn't move back if given the option. Son moved here at 3 months old. When we visit Louisiana, he asks why it's so gross there. We need more educated people staying there to fix the cities and towns, but we are driven away by continued dumb decisions, like a Lazy River over good education.

For the people that want to transfer student loan debt to the taxpayer, what are you going to do for the people starting college this year? What about the ones in 5 years? Nothing has changed, so they are going to be just in debt if not more. Are you planning to give them the same deal? Or is this just a special one-time-only opportunity to entice current Biden voters?

There isn't and hasn't been any outright forgiveness as Biden was pushing for. There is forgiveness based on policy that Clinton added, which at the soonest only happens after 10 years of payments. Anyone on those plans would gladly accept 1% interest instead.
The government is making a killing on student loans on these current plans. The video in OP is actually surprisingly truthful and accurate regarding student loans.

This is the best approach. Make it 1% or even 0.5%, but require that the principal be paid back in 30 years or less.

Can we stop calling it student loan forgiveness and start calling it what it is...taxpayer funded college degrees?

Mike Rowe has a really good take on this. Basically saying that a degree is a tool that people use in their career to help them be successful. So why are we trying to use taxpayer funds to pay off loans that people take out for a degree, but not doing that for tools that make other people successful in their career? For example, the tools or truck that a plumber or electrician needs to take out a loan and buy.

Because that still puts some accountability on the person who took out the loan. Not as good for buying votes.
