We've already been through these lines of arguments. The whole "Lib" argument is pretty horrible.

Here's a hint for you: None of the chuckleheads pushing for statehood today would be pushing for it if DC were some conservative / libertarian utopia.

If you think this is about anything other than 2 guaranteed Dem senators then you are frankly being naive.

No one in this country has "real" representation in the legislature.

can't believe all those idiots who live in a tornado prone area.

what about all those idiots who live in city below sea level?

I can't believe how many dummies live around fault lines or in big cities or in small cities or in the country or near alligators and snakes or near hurricane zones or in areas with drought.

Seriously, your argument is weak as hell

Of course I know that is why DC Statehood or DC full representation hasn't happened (at least in my cynical view) . I'm not stupid. But it is still a horrible reason when discussing why it should or should not happen.

Like I really care what that annoying Limey has to say. Why not give the land back to Virginia and Maryland and do away with the entire District of Columbia. After all, the only reason whe HAVE the D of C is so that one state cannot claim the nation's capital.

This is kind of what I was thinking. The only way you could get really upset by this would be to have a real faith in our democracy that most adults have lost by this point. I find this one kinda hard to give a shite about.

If representation were an important issue to me, why would I chose to live in an area that offered no representation?

I can rattle off around 10 states that I will never live in because of their laws on various subjects because that is important to me. Obviously there are things in DC more important to the residents than representation in Congress.

Why not just cede the primarily residential areas back to Maryland and keep the areas with the White House, The Capital, and the Supreme Court in a more compact District? It wouldn't be perfect, but could it work? You'd have DC, Maryland and DC, the federal district.

It's plausible, but the hassle of defining those boundaries and adopting new laws would be astoundingly challenging. Even getting to that point would require current DC residents to be on the same page, which would be an impossibility.

There are folks who would still live within the federal district boundaries, and they would still be without representation. It wouldn't be many, but what is the point of giving representation to most current DC residents? It should be all or nothing.

Also, it would leave little blotches of federal property all over Maryland/Virginia, and agencies like the Department of Interior would see their purpose of existence diminish quickly.

DC has a non voting Representative. Puerto Rico, Guam, and US Virgin Islands do too.

they could solve this issue easily by just exempting DC residents from paying federal income taxes...

Well, here's a reason for me: I don't want an area that is so heavily dependent on Federal government spending to have an equal say in how Federal government tax money is spent.

Would that 'state' even have an economy without FedGov?

because so much of the population is on the "other team" you want to deny them voting representation in Congress.

how American of you

I haven't heard a compelling reason why it should happen either. Under the Constitution, you step on Federal lands you are subject to Congress's discretionary police powers. If I decide to step onto Yellowstone I have to deal with the same thing. I just don't find this issue particularly compelling because I don't find it "fair" or "unfair," its just the situation that occurs when you decide to enter upon federal lands.

And I guess DC residents would also get zero federal benefits as well?
