Yeah Kobayashi MADE the hot dog contest. Nobody was eating more than like 20 dogs before him. Richard Shea treated him like trash once the contest was big though, because he wanted the face of eating to be an American, especially on July 4th.

Yep. Kobayashi stopped participating when MLE changed the rules and said that only those who sign an exclusive contract with MLE would be allowed to participate. That exclusive contract would have prevented Kobayashi from entering eating contests not organized by MLE. I also suspect that MLE would also take a percentage of the eater's earnings from personal appearances.
Kobayashi will always be the true hot dog king as he came up with dunking the buns in water to make them easier to digest which Joey and other eaters copied.

This past weekend I had 3 hotdogs and a burger in 10 minutes, and I felt fat.
