If the F & I folks were being honest, what fricking difference would it make?

Buyers are liars.
Sold cars for 10 years. There are ethical car salesmen. Customers are straight full of shite though.

Suppose they were being honest, you just lied to them to make the best deal you could and “screw” them. Kinda hypocritical, no?

People that get emotional about business transactions are weird.
It’s called leverage.

Oh COME ON. No.
To be fair, though, a dealership selling one or two premium brands will be much more honest and low-stress than Hendricks "THE GIANT" AutoMall ChryslerPlymouthEagleChevyDaihatsu or whatever.

If you are going to a dealership now days and don't already know what rate you can get or don't already have your financing set up and need to ask that question, I gotta question your intelligence!

Obviously the truth is being lost on you. Let me try to explain this. If the price named is the best price they can give, how could a cash or credit transaction matter in the least?
Is it so they can continue to get more money out of your pocket without you realizing it? Isn't that the definition of being dishonest? Perhaps a few of us do learn after being cheated, not to show our hand to a charlatan.
As a business man, when I give a price to a potential customer, the last thing I would ever try to do is to keep adding to it to take advantage of them in an unfair way. The price named is the price. Period.
Car dealerships are notorious for slick underhanded tricks, double and triple teaming customers and outright misrepresentations (lies). This is not something that is only believed by a minority. It's common knowledge. See my earlier post about the 'window etching" that was already on my car for just one example.
They have earned their reputation by putting in a lot of dedicated hard work.

You make a huge mistake. Don’t tell them you are paying cash upfront because the price will be High. Dealerships make their money on financing so they are willing to drop the price if they think you are financing a significant portion of the cost.
Tell them you want to finance 80% and negotiate for a lower price. Once they put the price in paper, tell them you are paying cash.
Why should I have to do this? This is stupid.
I want a car. It's like determining the greatest decision of your life.

A big part of getting the deal is all the rigamarole they put you through. If you want to skip that, use Carvana or True Car. No hassle. However, you probably won’t get the absolute best possible price. Just like people pay more to expedite through the private Car Title places to avoid the DMV, you can do the same with cars, but you have to pay a little more.

Neighbor of mine has bought (or at least acquired) two shiny new Mercedes sedans that way.
Would have been one Mercedes sedan, but she overestimated the ability of these vehicles to ford flooded parking lots. And apparently once you've done that, there's no putting them back together.
