I have passed on candidates that were wearing suits because they obviously weren't familiar with the culture of our industry.

They could be showing respect and seriousness of their intentions.

Yeah, passing on a guy BECAUSE he wears a suit is absolutely ridiculous.

There's your problem. Never forget, they aren't just judging you. You are also judging them.

An interview is a just conversation to determine whether or not you both think that what the other has to offer is good fit for each of you. That's all.

You may "need" the job, but not any worse than they "need" someone that can do the job.

And I try and take that in to account, but they are also showing that they may not be as familiar with the industry and/or position they are applying for as another candidate with similar qualifications.

This is true. I guess I should remember the times I turned down a job without an interview. Never really thought about it the other way around. Or maybe I just hate he idea of someone not thinking I can be a part of the team. Nobody likes rejection.

If you're confident in what you bring to the table, it will make the interviewer more confident in you as well. Don't sweat it if you're a little nervous. That's to be expected.

You'll do great.

This. I approach every interview with caution, because it could be an absolute shitshow that you are walking into if you accept. And there is a very real effect on your resume when you show job jumping (on a regular basis).

doubt you need to wear a suit

Im in the industry, Nice button down is all you need. its construction. if you go in there with a suit and your not applying for the PV position, a suit is overkill

industry and/or position

I dunno about that. It all depends on the company and situation. A small engineering firm may not care but a large one will. Same industry and position but the environment is different. However, that small firm shouldn't turn the candidate down just because they were over prepared for the situation. It's hard to judge what is needed at the time so most prepare for the worst. The worst could be a boss that is super formal in an informal workplace.

My brother wore a suit to a an interview for a managerial position at a steel manufacturer right before he graduated college. He was laughed at. The other guys were wearing jeans and steel toe boots. This was 3 years ago.

slacks, a nice button down, and tie...basically a suit without the jacket is perfect...the jacket can make you uncomfortable and sweaty in my experience...I got hired one time cause I was the only candidate that wore a tie...interviewer told me later on...def go with a tie

i've read a resume' or two, and one of the things i put a lot of stock in is the "hobbies" section at the bottom. if you don't have a "hobbies" section, you need one. experience, gpa, and references are good and all, but nothing tells a person's story better than how he spends his time away from work. this one guy wrote "poker and blackjack", so i asked him about it. he told me how he studies the games and hinted at how much he's won. you might think that's tacky to put on a resume', and at first i did too. but after he explained it, i realized he was not only a risk taker, but a successful risk taker, and just the kind of project manager i needed. i hired him on the spot.

unless they specifically tell you that it is a casual interview, I'd wear a suit

Best advice. In my office, typical attire is jeans and polos/button downs. I let applicants know the day before that they don't need to dress in suit and tie.
