You can teach.

I know that sucks, but I found physics pretty difficult compared to other sciences.

Not hardly, Stennis has a frick ton of jobs...and physics is just engineering without the cheat sheets.

shite, we’re probably about to hire again and right now it’s just two physics majors doing the work. Three would be better.

There’s cooler shite out at SSC though. Physical scientists...

Thanks for the replies everyone, it seems like Stennis would be a good place for me to look. I'll keep an eye out for any job postings.

I've unfortunately never used Python, used C++ somewhat. The programming languages that I've had to use the most are Labview and Matlab. At the very least I'd be open to hearing more about the job even though I'm not really experienced in those programming languages.

Tons of contractor positions, tons of civil servant jobs...

https://www.nasa.gov/centers/stennis/about/jobs/index.html

Michoud has them too. I can’t find the same type resource, but Vivace, A2R, S3, Bastion, Boeing...

That's not the way it works. In my previous post I put the link to the physicist jobs announcement. You must apply to it. Then, HR will forward your application to every group that has an opening. You need to navigate the process to be successful.

I worked out there 18 years for various agencies before moving on.

You may want to attend this presentation for a better understanding

Thanks for the clarification.

I'm not graduating until May 2020, so when I said that I'll keep an eye out, I really meant that I won't apply until closer to that time.

Unless if federal hiring is fundamentally different, the advice that I've always been given is to wait to apply until you're at least 3-4 months from graduation at the earliest.

Houston.
Reach out to field service companies.
Schlumberger
Halliburton etc.

Realize industry is cyclical AF. price drops and massive layoffs happen.

You could also get a lab job at a plant via temp agency.
shite pay.
But foot in door. Could be regular employee within year.

That's the route I'd recommend over going offshore.

You should listen to the overview presentation when you get a chance. A huge perk of working out at Stennis is the Center for Higher Learning

You can attain a PhD while working out there if you put in the work and most of the employers (whether contractor or govt) will reimburse the cost. Getting a PhD for free isn't a bad deal.

PhD in physics is free. You get paid a stipend as you do your research.
Stipend funded via advisors (bosses) grants or via teaching assistant assignment.

That does sound like a pretty good deal.

The stipend I get now as a master's student is barely enough to live on and the health insurance isn't that great. PhD students don't do much better at most places either.

The low pay is one of the main reasons why I decided against continuing my graduate studies, but if I had an actual job with full time pay, then I wouldn't really feel like I was putting my life on hold to stay in school.
