No, because if I stand outside in 95% humidity for more than 5 minutes I start sweating.

And before you make some kind of childish remark. No, I am not 300lbs or anywhere near it.

I'm sorry. Sounds like a you condition. Not all of us suffer from this. In fact, I'd say most of us don't. Especially not when its 70 degrees outside.

Are you talking about places like BR, Houston, Dallas, etc?

You can commute by bike all year long in Dallas and many people do. I ride my bike about 4 miles and I'm not sweating when I get to my destination even in July and August. I'm sure if your commute is longer you would work up a glaze but many businesses now provide shower facilities for their employees who commute by bike. The only time its tough to ride is in Jan and Feb when its sometimes 38 degrees and raining.....the rain sux.

honestly, if you can't stand outside when its 70 degrees without sweating maybe move to a cooler climate?

city property taxes

Maybe things are different in other parts of the country, but in my parts, there are no property taxes on bicycles.

Maybe things are different in other parts of the country but in my parts, the term "property taxes" is usually used to refer to real property taxes.

Y'all keep dishonestly phrasing it as exercise only. Plenty of people would use their bikes to commute too

Define plenty? Every single person I know now who rides a bike for any reason does it for exercise/triathlete type stuff. Literally every single one. And every one of them thinks the roads should be equally for them.

Once plenty is defined then we need to determine if that is worth all the costs to create bicycle lanes etc. This entire thing is built upon emotion. People in BR are not riding bikes to work en masse. It is the exact same reason the CATS doesn't make sense in BR. If bikes would work then CATS would be a booming success already. But, people in BR are not busing or biking to work.

It is either too hot, too far or they drive and have plenty of parking.

I pay property taxes on my personal property too - truck, boat, motorcycle, plane. None on my bicycle, even though it's worth north of $4k.

Some people don't have cars. They only have a bicycle.

Why is CATS so unused by the tons of bicyclers in Baton Rouge?

I know 10 or 15 people who commute on a bike. Not all the time but 60-70% of the time....well 2 or 3 of them are hardcore 100%. I ride my bike to the bank, grocery, restaurant, bar, swimming pool to swim a work out 3 times a week.....not all the time but 50-60% of the time. I work from home so don't need to ride to work.

So the chicken comes first? That's not the way it works. If you build good, safe bike infrastructure, people will use it. This has been proven in cities all over the world. Clarkson's diatribe was really about all the bike infrastructure they are building in London, and people are using the hell out of it. But he knows there is an audience of people who don't like change and he is playing to that.

The problem in the south is the infrastructure is being built but its crap. In Dallas the bike lanes they have created are just a paint stripe on the side of the road, the width is way too narrow and half the lane is in the gutter which is un-rideable. And because its just a stripe, all sorts of debris and glass gets pushed into this lane by cars. Grade separated (by a curb usually) lanes like in NYC, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Barcelona etc is the only way to go.

I am all for it. Anything to help with traffic. I am just not convinced it makes sense. Until it does I will argue against it. But, just because I like it doesn't mean it makes sense financially. If you asked anyone if we should have buses and trains then most would say yes but CATS proves BR is not a town like that. For many reasons. I think bikes are along the same vein.

There are a lot of people who say trains make no sense, at least in southern cities that are spread out. I just think changing peoples behavior so they ride a train or bike rather than drive takes years, not just 1 or 2 years either. And bike lanes aren't that expensive in the grand scheme of things. My experience is in Dallas and traffic in the city core and adjacent neighborhoods is increasing and the population is booming in the city core so it will continue to get worse so having alternative modes of getting around is a sound planning strategy. And "walkable" neighborhoods is a buzz word but its what most people moving into the city core want. Slowing down traffic by narrowing roads is one of the tenets of this planning philosophy and adding bike lanes by taking away a lane of traffic is one way to narrow roads and add an alternate transportation mode. Maybe BR isn't ready for this but I've been in your traffic so something has to give.
