It’s a massive scam. A lot of it just gets shipped off to China

And they dump it in the ocean. This is essentially our recycling program.

Anyone who pays for recycling is an idiot. Unless you’re paying to have an extra garbage can and you know it, then ok.

Besides the fact that it’s not being recycled, why should I have to pay to give a company their raw materials? If anything I should get a discount for recycling, not be charged for it.

Bingo.

Toss the plastic. Not worth it. Mostly unusable.

Paper is break-even in essence.

But it’s a sin to not recycle metal whenever possible.

Ended here awhile ago, but we didn't have bins we had big blue cans.... so I gained an extra trash can. It's come in handy a few times and probably ends up in the same place. I for one have loved it

Why they didn't cycle it right the first time?

If recycling was cost effective, residents would not need to pay for it. The company would make their money selling the recycled goods they collected.

When I was a kid the schools all had these big recycling containers. Why not go back to that?

If anyone knows where to take cans in JP let me know, I’ve been colllecting them and tossing everything else since the contract ran out at the beginning of the year.

It's only temporary, the recycling program will be back likely within a month after they work out a deal

I've never really considered myself an environmentalist or green person in any way but we really should do something about single use plastics. I think recycling is probably a waste but if we could change our packaging and shipping habits that would probably be beneficial.

Some of the crunchy folks are upset because they love the planet and stuff. I read that only 1% of the shite people put on the curb actually gets recycled.

I love bringing this up to people that make a big deal about recycling in LA. I say you know you aren’t actually recycling, they are instinctively offended y what I just said, then I ask them where they think it goes…the look on their face that they had never once considered that recycling involves more than them putting it in a separate bin is quite satisfying

ETA: didn’t they catch a Chinese company a few years ago dumping all the recycling water bottles in the ocean?

Recycling is great in theory and everyone should want a cost effective and efficient way to recycle. Plastics are a fricking nuisance and we need to figure something out eventually.

That's just not the case right now and most of it probably creates more waste than it saves.

It's more of a boomer thing than a "conservative" thing. They see it as more a lifestyle than a political idealogy. My uncle called me a "liberal" for recycling my motor oil instead of throwing it in the ditch and letting it get into the wastewater system or the aquifer.

Lazy, self absorbed people who are insecure about their lazy self absorption. They view anyone who self selects to do anything “more” than they do as a tacit attack on them, so they lash out. It’s the same base logic behind unhealthy people mocking others who exercise or try to “eat right”, addicts mocking people trying to get clean, etc. Your actions make them feel badly about themselves, so they try to make you feel less than as a defense mechanism.
