JD Powers report is out and Tesla is dead last is problems reported by owners.

Worse they were last by a long hot! The ratings are based on new owner complaints per 100 vehicles.

Results of the 2020 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study are in and it's not great news for Tesla.
In total, J.D. Power ranked 32 car brands for its study, which included Buick, Volkswagen, Lexus, Cadillac, BMW, Toyota, Acura, Subaru, and Jaguar. Of them all, Tesla scored the lowest among the bunch in terms of new vehicle quality and problems experienced by owners.
This is for initial quality, which is a measure of build quality. I would expect Tesla to do very poorly there.

Those were dependability studies - 3 years of ownership. And Chevy and Toyota probably cleaned house as usual.

It's initial quality, not reliability. It's a measure of build quality. Bugs in infotainment systems or misaligned trim hits manufacturers hard in this study.
The dependability study is separate from this and it measures reliability. Dodge, Fiat, Land Rover, Jeep, and Ford are near the bottom in that study. Lexus, Toyota, and Buick usually score near the top.
