There are bed and breakfasts and smaller hotels all around the garden district and lower garden district

I'm sorry, is a B&B some radically different enterprise than a hotel that we can't group them as temporary lodging establishments?
Have you not been to New Orleans?
Would you not call the area around the Columns Hotel residential?

I don't consider a B&B in the same category as a hotel, or even an Air Bnb. They usually have an onsite resident owner whose presence mitigates many of the potential problems.

That's convenient

It's more accurate than grouping every form of lodging from a 1500 room hotel to a 2 bedroom duplex in the same class.

I didn't know you were the final arbiter on the definition of hotel. I never knew it had a # requirement.

I'm as much of an arbiter as anyone else on this thread

Even I don't claim that status over Merriam-Webster

I'm pretty torn on air bnb. I've used it in the past and will likely use it in the future. That said, nola has pretty limited housing stock, and it kind of sucks that a bunch of non local buyers are buying up tons of property for the sole purpose of running an illegal business out of them.
It's not exactly a great thing when a significant chunk of your neighborhood is filled with a different group of people every 3 days.
I don't mind Airbnb as a service. I just don't like the idea of a decent portion of nolas already very limited housing stock being taken off the local market (buyers and long term tenants). If you rent out a room, or you rent your place for the week you're gonna be out of town, no problem. You're kind of a dick if you buy a shitload of property specifically to run illegal STRs.

Thank you for a reasonable post.

They mad? Oh, they mad.
Get in where you fit in, sucka. It's called the future. Hop on board or get left in the dust.

There's a difference between illegality, the discussion of what should or should not be illegal, and being an a-hole.
For example, someone built a modern contemporary house on Henry Clay towards Children's Hospital.
Was it illegal? No.
Should it be illegal? No.
Are they kinda an a-hole building that style of house there? Ya

Free market, can't beat them then legislate them.

Used airBnb once in San Francisco, never again. The dumbass we rented from left the key for his apartment under the welcome mat for the entire building. Literally anyone could have found it and robbed the whole building. Awful idea.

It's already been legislated. Airbnb style rentals have been illegal in nola long before Airbnb was a thing.
Now we can say that it shouldn't be illegal. I won't even necessarily disagree that it should be legal.
That being said though, unchecked STRs can, have, and will cause various problems.

Short term rentals are illegal in nola. It's just impossible to enforce effectively.

I know this.
And I agree, and if one city in the country is going to figure out enforcement, it won't be New Orleans

I do.
One time a Germanwings pilot suffering from depression flew an Airbus full of innocent people into the ground. That too was an "Awful idea". Using your "logic", no one should ever use commercial airplane travel again.
