The main problem was the elites of Cambridge fell in love w/ his story so much they developed temporary suspension of disbelief, ignoring logic and accepted unreal things. Don't forget he also claimed to have had blood clots in his lungs and a stroke. A large number of his claims could've been back checked quite easily, e.g 30 marathons in 35 days. He checked off a large number of "boxes" they were looking for so they didn't want to disprove the story.

He also claimed he didn't speak until he was 11 and couldn't read or write until he was 18. And that he had cancer, a stroke, locked in syndrome, and a few other insane medical issues.
