Can you explain why L2 is where it is? Logic would tell me that L2 should be on the inner side and not the outer. Seems having the sun pull one direction with the earth pulling the other way would make more sense

L2 is more of a pseudo gravity well. The farther an object orbits a body the slower it goes. For example, ISS orbits once every 90min or so while the moon orbits once a month. Orbits are basically an object falling at the same rate it is moving sideways. The reason L2 exists is because the two objects (earth and sun) align such that the point mass of the orbiting body is larger for the more distant object.

This basically means it's falling faster so it's traveling sideways faster. This allows the object that is more distant (James Web) to have the same angular velocity as the closer object (earth) so that it stays in the same place relative to the object in the closer orbit (earth) in relation to the orbiting body (the sun).

real engineering (youtube)

Part of this video breaks down the real concern for the micro-meteorites. How they designed with those in mind.

that is all just straight up cool and makes it easier to understand the general principles while not being lost. some great footage of the actual telescope as well

There is another Lagrange point on the inner.

Another useless fact about Lagrange points: It is not pronounced like La Grange GA or the ZZ Top song where gran sounds like grain, it has a guttural sound like the gron in Gronkowski.

He does a really good job of presenting info.

He fanboi's over electric and hydrogen energy, but does a good job presenting the info. Has some older content on carbon capture as well, give a basis.

Sun Shield fully deployed successfully

That's great news. I watched a long video yesterday about some of the technology on James Webb (including the shields and how they will deploy them) and was blown away.

Yesterday also led me to Wiki to read about Lagrange points. I had never heard about those until yesterday. Cool shite.

I can't fricking wait to see the images this thing starts shooting back to us. They will be insanely incredible.

I can’t wait for high fidelity 4K pics of aliens assholes

For real though, this thing is gonna give us some damn good pictures and information that is wayyyy to complex for my dumb arse to understand.

Interesting note. Supposedly, they don't have arse cracks...just a butt-hole.

I wonder if phasers would work on that thing.

The low side temperature incremental is pretty impressive for such a short distance. I guess that is normal in space. The material engineering that went into designing for those temperature incrementals was obviously very challenging.

In "Interstellar" time yes. In real time no. However, if you see books randomly falling off the shelf in your house, please report it to us.

As I recall they did not. It took

to kill the beast.
