Just take the good advice of careful planning included in many replies already.

You know, it is a dang shame that perhaps the most beautiful(geographic) islands in the region also happens to be one of the less safe to visit.

Tip: Any location with a crap load of AIs is not ideal for traveling around alone unless you are well versed in the culture. A ton of people also do the DR every year because of price and it is a similar situation. They also typically find themselves encamped on a 40 acre resort for 7 days. The 40 minute shuttle ride from the airport to Punta Cana was all I needed to see. Poverty everywhere and armed guards sitting at intersections where shuttle buses passed through. Asked the driver what the deal was and he said they were there to deter locals from hopping on the bus and robbing everybody at gunpoint.

I went to Hedonism back in the 80's and the natives worried you to death to buy their drugs when you strayed off. Very annoying. Now it is probably not safe at all to leave the compound.

If we're strictly talking about areas surrounding AI's then yeah that's a fair statement. But there are are a bunch of cool places off the beaten path with fewer tourists that are 180 degrees different that are both lacking hustlers and perfectly safe.

Yes it's safe. I've been numerous times and never felt unsafe. People who act like its unsafe have never been. Kingston is a different story but is walk down Negril at night holding my wallet out before I would in New Orleans.

And even then it's certain parts of Kingston. The whole city isn't a warzone. I know people that have been there and I'd love to go. It's just kind of a pain in the arse getting there from where I stay on the south coast every year. Next year hopefully.

It doesn't matter if you leave or not, you wont be safe from the non-stop Bob Marley music.

Did you know Bob Marley is from Jamaica?
Well, Bob Marley is from Jamaica.
That's why we play him all day, every day.
Bob Marley, that is.

Here, have some more rum. It will drown out the Bob Marley.
Eventually.

Yes. It's no different than any other place, just don't be stupid.

I swear some of y'all live in a bubble and have no sense of adventure.

This.

And, like everyone else said, you will constantly be asked to buy stuff.

Yes, we went shopping (and not in those crappy walled off Prison malls) in Ocho Rios. Just be cool, buy your dope err souvenirs, and you won't be messed with.

I don't think I'd go outside of the market areas that the tour buses drop you off. But frick those prison malls. You will get much better deals at the local markets in town.

I thought Dunn's River Falls was awesome.

Rick's Cafe is also definitely something to experience

True.

You couldn't hear Bob Marley over the rushing water.
