In the old days you clicked on the folder, drug the music to the folder on the phone and released it. That was it.
You mean the days where you had to rotate which 12 songs you brought with you?

It’s pretty easy. Good luck.

I just opened iTunes and have the entire Led Zeppelin archive at my fingertips...

Jesus Christ ...all I want to do is add my Led Zeppelin 10 disc MP3 archive to my new iPhone X.
Must I really obtain a master's degree from Apple University to load music to their phone?
Even Bill Gates figured out the simplicity called "drag and drop" into a folder.
RANT OVER

I have to say that I have a like/hate thing with iphones.
Reliability and stability wise, I like them. 98% of the time they work. I think they've tried to add too much functionality to them sometimes but overall they're good.
At the same time, I hate how closed the system is.
Infuriating at times.

Spotify for the win
Yup. Been on Spotify for about 6 years now and I've never looked back.

They started making iTunes really difficult to use when they launched Apple Music. I think they did it on purpose in order to try and get you to pay the $10 a month subscription for Apple Music. If YouTube let you listen to the song with your phone locked, I’d quit paying Apple for it

I have a music service but when I travel I like to have "my music" on my phone so I do have to rely on cell or wifi. I have an extensive collection of music I bought converted from vinyl and CD to MP3 from the 70's to current. The point being, this is my music and I want it on my phone and Apples system is to dam difficult at times

I have so much "invested" in the iPhones it's hard to walk away.
The phone wars are getting as ridiculous as the light duty truck market, these days. The folding Samsung that goes for around 2 grand is already breaking. Apple seems to come out with a new or "tweener" model every 6 months.
What will the next big thing be? Technology never stops evolving......

No it isn’t complicated at all.
You have multiple methods to choose from.
1. You could use the $25 iMatch service that matches all your music to what Apple has and uploads the rest to your cloud so you can access it anywhere.
2. You could simply install a Plex Media Server (or Emby) and point that to your music directory. You can then either stream your files directly or sync them to your device if you’re going to be somewhere you don’t want to use up bandwidth.
3. Use Spotify, tidal, any of those services. Chances are they have your music. Unless you want a specific pressing or edition.
The iTunes system isn’t the best but it is free and 99% of the users have no problem with it. FWIW my iTunes has zero issues handling my 33,800 songs and correctly identifying them or transferring them to my phone or iPad.
If you want something that is the best go spend your money on Roon.
