The biggest problem is we didn't make the investments when we didn't have a giant socialist system and land/cap ex was cheaper.

I fear it is too late now. Too much money going to the welfare state plus things like construction and property are too expensive. A bridge now? A railway now? A loop? Really expensive plus what money do we have now that healthcare and schools are so damn expensive?

We were too corrupt back in the day and not investing in our future.

Madison would easily be far and away the nicest city in Louisiana.

It is crazy how so many suburbs in Louisiana didn't follow the Madison formula. In Louisiana, it seems like the landowners just tried to get as rich, as quickly as possible and not really have a longterm plan.

Constitution needs to be completely re-done, social services need to be completely re-done, and the funding for our education system needs to be completely re-done.

No candidate with those goals will ever get elected because the people who would stand to lose out of money won't allow it.

They've got an authoritarian mayor that helps with that. My in-laws live in Madison on the Reservoir. Its a great place.

I’ve been to both. The people suck. Los Angeles is terrible. Austin is a nice place but I couldn’t live among those people.

I’ve been to both.

Lived in Austin and spend almost a year in California.

LA and Austin would both be the nicest cities in Louisiana by a long shot

Oh they had a plan. Take their money and GTFO of Louisiana. Now you deal with the flooding, crime, shitty infrastructure, schools, health care, cost of insurance, etc.

it was a nice run TDc, but I knew it couldn't last.

Had a feeling you'd get all fired up after the BR thread this morning.

Sounds like Louisiana is really into smoking weed. Maybe if Louisiana got paid to smoke weed it would solve a lot of financial problems. But, southern baptist religion

It is amazing that those other states are easily outclassing LA.

Yep.

The thing is, the state is a reflection of its citizens and the LA citizens are majority retarded.

The constitution needs to be scrapped entirely.

Half of the universities need to be shutdown and the funding needs to be consolidated behind 2-3 universities.

absolutely. Yet this (well written and accurate) op/ed immediately suggests underfunding of state universities. Cant have it both ways.

I think what scruffy is saying is that instead of spreading that money through our plethora of state-funded universities, to consolidate and spend that same amount of money on a few major universities. We’re not paying too much for higher education, we’re paying for too many institutions.

And I was quite surprised by the article. No sjw shite. Just straight to the point and made a lot of sense.

ETA: and I know, it was a good run. I think I made it like 2-3 months without one of these.

Best thing I ever did was leave LA after high school. I often wonder what my life would be like had I stayed.

Yep.

Unfortunately, these people were usually well connected with the Mayors and City Councils and got free reign to do whatever. Like in Madison, the Cities should have had a better long term plan. Now many suburbs in Louisiana will turn into dumps.

It's hilarious and tragic simultaneously.

And the only way it can pull that off is because it's true.

I completely agree with Scruffy on universities. I still perceive an undertone of needing more revenue in the op/ed. Every (major)news organization in this state has supported JBE on his agenda to raise taxes. They can preach about getting our financial affairs in order, but ask them to provide a list of universities to close and watch how quickly they squirm. They love the idea of raising taxes, loathe the idea of cutting spending.

It is hard to believe over time that New Orleans didnt end up with one decent suburb. Birmingham of all places, which is similar in size, has like 10.
