This.

The way our social services programs are structured make them into traps for many. Easy as hell to sign up for and get on services, far tougher to get out of the system because of tiering penalties and bonuses for increasingly irresponsible behavior.

You “positive idea” is to go back to a time that the historical record describes as having a staggering amount of violent crime, such that people weren’t safe to travel over distances or at night. Do you have any indication as to why it would work better now than it did then?

All that shite occurred outside of any town back in those days. Mostly road bandits. That shite is over with. There weren’t the violent crimes in the cities themselves like it is now. Not even remotely close. If you want to throw in Jack The Ripper in London, fine but we’re always going to have serial killers

I’m talking about nonstop, daily, constant crime in the cities that is currently exploding! You’re comparing apples to oranges. Your observation is badly flawed.

Our criminal system does reform people and has changed many of people for the better. The problem is, they’re letting people out before the system can be affective. If you spend 2 months behind bars for theft, you’ll probably do it again, if you spent 20 years behind bars, when released, I highly doubt you’ll do it again.

You can use Suction Curettage (Aspiration) - it can't be considered cruel and unusual punishment - Democrats won't mind since they use it to kill babies.

Prisoners should spend about 23 hours a day in their cells and the remaining time for meals. And if they start getting out of line, 24 hours a day their cell, food delivered. Give them some old library books and let them pass the time.

Definitely solitary confinement would be a huge move in the right direction but the snowflake woke scum would say that’s cruel and unusual punishment because they love, cherish and adore the coddling of violent criminals and want them to have more rights than any victim.

Prisons need to be set up where the violent criminals have little to no interaction with each other or anyone else. Solo exercise time. No interaction in the cafeteria.

The cost of running basically a supermax prison in Louisiana would be astronomical. They can barely fund and staff the prisons in their current situation.

Agree. There is no benefit to society in keeping convicted violent criminals incarcerated at taxpayers expense for decades.

Would be murderers aren't scared of sitting in a jail cell. They'd be terrified if the well known consequence for cold blooded murder was a 250 mile one-way offshore helicopter ride.

I’d be ok with just banishing anyone who commits a violent crime.

Do you honestly look around at your job and think, “man, these guys aren’t getting enough chances?”

Depends entirely on the guy.

Beyond that, while that’s something I might discuss over a beer, it’s not something I’m going to discuss on TD

With that said, I will absolutely say that our prison system is shite and does a shite job of rehabilitation, as a rule. And the bitch of it is that we spend a tremendous amount of money on said shite system. I think we can and should do better.

This goes against the white liberal, moderate democrat, left leaning independent agenda of keeping poor people poor though.

You’re talking about rehabbing people who were likely lost by their teens. The only rehab that works is a lot of time.

frick that. Grown adults know the difference between right and wrong. They don't need to be thrown in jail 8 different times for robbery. After 2, you've shown that you won't quit and that you are nothing but a burden to society.

From The New York Times.

I’m sure they carefully ‘researched’ for that article. Thanks for posting a pay link. That’s always helpful.

Did they bring back Jayson Blair for this article?
