MORGANZA, La. (WAFB) - Between the summer drought and now this brutal cold spot, crawfish farmers say they’re having trouble filling their traps.

Many people are wondering, when and if the price will go down.

It was a frozen scene on Wednesday in Louisiana, and the thing people want the most is a warm pot of boiled crawfish.

But this freeze may have pushed back your plans to find some decent prices.

“It slows the process of the growth down for the crawfish and uh, when it gets this cold, they really don’t move so you’re not looking to catch hardly anything,” said Garrett Frey with Four Oaks Farm in Morganza, La.

There, the ice on their ponds is around an inch and a half thick. So with no easy way of pulling out the traps, it’s a guaranteed day with no crawfish. While they say they have experienced below-freezing temperatures before, this year is still uncharted territory for them.

But until then, some places will be cutting back on their supply and charging more.

"Everybody wants crawfish but when only a few handfuls of people are catching them, there’s not much you can do,” Frey finished
