There's about zero chance that one can reside in NOLA and not know of anyone affected by crime.
You have zero idea what you are taking about.

I do. There's literally nothing on your side except your FOS personal anecdotes.

I'm just saying that if you have half a brain that this city is safe. I lived here since 2005 and have never felt nervous let alone a victim of any form of crime. As I stated before I don't personally know of anyone that has either.
Talking to a few people about this today - I'm sure I'm the rule and not the exception.
Crime can happen anywhere .. It's funny but I know people whose homes have been bugularized in st Charles parish, people whose cars have been stolen in Jefferson parish, families who have had love ones murderd on the north shore but according to many NOLA is a third world country unlike any other place around

I'm from NOLA and I've known many people affected by crime and everyone I know knows someone as well. I agree, it'd be hard not to know someone.

I'm sure you do. I'm not saying that nobody is effected by crime in the city .. I'm just saying that crime can happen anywhere and I have a feeling that sometimes stories can be made up and exaggerated concerning NOLA crime.

It's one of the top 50 dangerous cities in the world.
Stop ignoring that.
Your personal anecdotes are irrelevant in comparison to statistics.

I'm not claiming that it's not. All I am saying that if you are somewhat smart crime is not an issue. At all.
For people to forgo plans to the city due to the crime rate is ridiculous

There have been tourists in hotels hit by stray bullets. Paul Prudhomme got hit by a stray bullet while doing a demonstration at a golf tournament...

"Smart" would be living somewhere where you don't have to alter your daily choices to avoid crime.

An innocent bystander was shot inside the lobby of a Central Business District hotel by a stray bullet from a fight going on outside Wednesday at about 9:30 p.m., said Sgt. Joe Narcisse, a New Orleans Police Department spokesman.
Par for the course for New Orleans

No one should ever be near Bournon St unless you are going to a strip club, then just get straight to where you are going and don't hang out in the street. Much better bar scenes uptown, on Frenchman, and in the warehouse district.
That is my plan for next time, but I am getting old. 43. Don't want to stick out like a sore thumb.

could have happened anywhere
Sure, one isolated incident like that could happen anywhere. This particular shooting was right around the same time as the Prudhomme thing, and also the same time period there were 5 shootings during Mardi Gras, one of which was on a parade route on Canal and resulted in a death. That was the year I moved away, so I'm not as familiar with incidents afterwards other than what I see from NOLA.com on facebook and from this site. Obviously the incidents are still happening.
Your original assertion was that crime won't impact your life if you are "smart" in New Orleans. That particular 3-4 month period you could be attending a parade, a golf tournament, or just standing in a hotel lobby and have a risk of being shot. That's not normal. If you're trying to normalize that type of violence, then you're part of the problem.

I feel safe in NOLA, but that's just me.
