"The key to success in the restaurant industry is consistency. So anytime you go to a CaliBurger anywhere you know that the patty will be cooked exactly the same," said John Miller, CEO of Cali Group, the company that runs the chain. The robot was developed by a subsidiary called Miso Robotics.

So how does it work? Before Flippy can get started, it needs a little human help. A co-worker puts raw patties on the grill.

this is retarded. Mcdonalds has used timed presses to cook their burgers exactly the same since early 90s.

When I worked there in 92, It used to cook for 41 seconds for the 10 to 1s(small patties) then it would automatically open.
Automated cooking tech is over 30 yrs old.

Miso Robotics says Flippy costs about $60,000 minimum. CaliBurger is using Flippy in its Pasadena store starting Monday with plans to expand the use of it at other locations soon.

They said the robot was made by a subsidiary of CaliBurger. So this is kind of a DIY robot. I'm sure the cost would come down a good bit at scale. Still $60k is 3 years of a $10 an hour full time employee. If it's reliable and maintenance costs aren't too bad, that's a short time for it to pay for itself. It's even shorter when you figure it will be covering 2-3 full time shifts and pay for itself in 1-2 years.

Today, but what about in 5 years?

Flippy just flips.

The device also learns through artificial intelligence - basically, the more burgers that Flippy flips, the smarter it gets.

Also, you may want to wait a few weeks while he experiments on giving people salmonella until he gets smart.

That's what I was thinking. Flippy just gives the guy a minute to frick around while the patties are on the grill.
