It’s borderline criminal how the news handles the weather forecast

They string you along all night but you never know when they’re going to spring it on you. Goodness knows if it’s a forecast you want to see, they’ll string you along. But sometimes they’ll just spring it on you.

They also are horribly inconsistent in uploading to their sites the latest forecast so you have to watch it live.

And checking the weather online just isn’t the same as hearing from your local weather people.
1. They update randomly and might not be up to date
2. Local weather people are good at pointing out different variables that is totally lost on reading the weather online

Sorry you are smart enough to figure out Weather Underground.

NWS

They update regularly, with the same forecast your news people end up using anyway. Not sure what local variables you might be missing.

Use a free radar app to see if it's about to rain in real time. You ought to be good to go.

I do read the scientific forecast discussion on Weather Underground daily. They don’t update it very often. The last update they had for norther Illinois for long term forecast was 8 hours ago.

I find it fascinating that people actually watch local news

They pull from the NWS, who typically update those every 12 hours unless there's some big impact event coming.

Unless there is a tornado, hurricane, or chance of snow, the weather segment on the news is worthless.
Unless there is an OT8+ presenting it.

In general, I dislike our local stations’ weather segments. They almost always read stuff verbatim that is already written out on the screen instead of elaborating on it. Sometimes they even point to the words as they’re reading.

But I agree it’s annoying to not reliably have certain segments at designated times in the broadcast.

Thats fine. It’s not that helpful. They generalize way too much to the point that it’s farcical and their discussions do not line up with weather underground forecasts at all. “There may be weather. There may not be weather. We will know in a couple of days”. I like reading some of the science, but that’s it.

My whole life it’s been around 15-18 minutes into the newscast followed by sports. Sometimes they do a quick preview early on. I think only wwl in New Orleans would do sports then weather.

And don’t forget to protect your plants, pets, and pipes.

Coming back with sports, after this.....

Clicked your link and immediately regret my decision. See I'm under a winter storm watch

quote:

WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM SATURDAY AFTERNOON
THROUGH MONDAY AFTERNOON...

* WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Light snow will begin as early as
Saturday morning. Snow will become heavy late Saturday afternoon
and Saturday night and continue into Sunday morning. Snow will
then transition to lake effect Sunday afternoon and continue
through Monday. At this time, greater than 7 inches of snow is
possible. Gusty winds and arctic air will also produce
significant blowing and drifting snow and wind chills well
below zero.

There’s a potential 5 days of snow within the next week and I need to figure that into my commute. The local weather people are absolutely great for giving good timing of when certain systems will arrive.

Where are you at exactly? Chicago?

Generally speaking, you probably miss the snow tomorrow. South of there should get a little. Friday, looks like morning rush would be clear but probably starting to snow for the evening commute and pretty solid snowfall over Friday night.

Exact timing is always kind of in flux.

Yeah, I got the general idea of it. In the winter, i check the weather online like 4 times s day. I just like hearing the different up to date interpretations from various professionals.

I just wish it’d be in the same segment every day!

I understand that. Winter weather is tough to forecast well, especially concerning timing.

If you do the Twitter thing, consider looking up #ILwx. You ought to be able to get quite a few folks in your feed that have good information. Your local weather people, NWS Chicago, ect. Ought to keep you fairly up to date.

It is January in Chicago, you don't need to check your weather app 4 times a day.

In case you are new to the area, they do have snow plows and they rarely get ice, so your commute isn't going to be all that fricked up either way.

Tell us how your blue suit went over at the super fancy NYE party with important people. That's what we really want to know.
