Saying that the funds would be segregated is hardly a summarization of “we would have to create an entirely new government from scratch”.

No inherent problem, beyond a ton of costly government redundancy that people who live in and around the city of Baton Rouge will have a majority in and will therefore be able to dominate, if they so choose. We have to play nice in a consolidated government; deconsolidate and it becomes a base political contest.

More EBR residents live outside of BR than inside BR.

It is funny that you feel BR currently has to play nice with parish politics in a consolidated govt. 5 years of delays to do what the people voted for must be a nicer gesture to the people of StG than I thought it was (and BR still didn’t get its finances straightened out).

Everyone living outside of BR and in another city already has to deal with the city govt and the parish govt (along with Sheriff and so on). The unincorporated areas will have the same amount of levels as before as well. Only BR will get an additional independent layer of govt added on top of the city govt to deal with.

What was merged becomes unmerged and like most of the parishes in the state. Nothing is really being created from scratch.

I see zero benefit of the current system. Being the mayor of BR and the Parish President has become a huge conflict of interest.

It’ll just be on a ballot next year and no one will show up to vote and they’ll pass.

This was more of a “frick you” to the city of BR/Sid Edwards.

How? Is it homesteaded? Honestly wondering because I think I understand how it works but maybe not. Haven't been here long enough to experience it myself. I have family that want to move here but see these anecdotal bits online that make them fear their taxes would soar which doesn't make sense to me. What am I missing? Are actual primary home property taxes for long time residents really sky rocketing a despite level millage rates and SOH protections?

Wont really get into the detail but everything has skyrocketed from property taxes to insurance rates in the last 5 years in Florida . They tell you house value has increased but who gives a dam if you plan on staying in it for 30 years. Our Mayor in Jax seems to think raising property taxes thru the roof every year will help keep top notch police, fireman etc... What it really means there is no checks and balances in our local government to stop them from spending. Why would you? when you got a blank check to squeeze the Homeowners every year for more Money.

I feel sorry for Sid. He won an election to take over a city/parish that was robbing non-city citizens to the tune of $40M annually and no longer has that slush fund.

I do not feel sorry for his lack of transparency with how he was going to spend the money that would collected from the 3 entities.

They intentionally put it on a Saturday with a home lsu game and nothing else of importance on the ballot so it would be a low turnout and likely pass.
But it didn’t.

Sid Edwards is by all accounts a good dude, but he inherited a disaster. Baton Rouge will get worse before it gets better. It may not get better. There's not a lot of untapped potential here. It's a poor crime ridden city in a poor underpopulated state.

We voted taxes down pretty handily in March so the politicians wait for a LSU home game and run it again and surprise surprise it passes with votes to spare.

And they already admitted they are going to work to put it back on the ballot again.

They always do this. The public rejects it and they keep putting ot on the ballot until it passes and then there is no real way to get rid of it.

Except that’s not working these days. People are tired of being taxed and getting shite returns on their money.
Had the bailout money not have been included in this Thrive proposal I bet it would have passed. I would have voted yes instead of no. I think most people would much rather their parish tax money going towards stormwater and drainage improvements than libraries and the corrupt COA. I bet it would have been close to 70% yes if it was just that.
It was shitty to throw that bailout money in there and people saw it for what it was. Pay for your own shite, and if you can’t, then that’s your (city of BR) problem, not the parish’s problem.

I'm not clear on Mosquito Control. Why is he raiding those funds? People's lives literally depend on it.

Because they want to spend it the way they want to and they really don’t care about your best interest. They just want your $ to do what they want to do with it. They only care about their best interest. This is true about all governments. You gotta keep them in check.

Ever heard of Off insect repellent? Mosquito control is a luxury, not a necessity. And it’s Pretty hyperbolic to say “lives literally depend on it”.

You know what’s a bigger threat than a mosquito bite potentially killling you? Some hood rat robbing you or assaulting you. Or some asshat in Doge Charger wrecking into you on the interstate because he driving like a complete moron. These are the things BR needs to address. If they have to take funds from mosquito control or the library so be it. Getting crime under control in the city should take precedent over all other services.
