In May of 2001 gas was $.99 in LA. It was $1.09 in FL. 3.5 months later we had 9/11 and it was artificially inflated.
Record profits happened every quarter for a long time.

The OT didn't exist. The horror.

You could write a “counter check” at the store. Local stores had blank check pads from the two banks in town on the counter by the register.
You picked your bank, filled out a check, and signed it. Didn’t even have to write an account number (if we had them). Your signature would make it work. This was in the 70s to maybe early 80s.

When I lived in New Mexico in '73, I remember newspaper reports about parts of the state still waiting for their first electrical service.

"Smear the Queer" was a popular recess activity.

I am only 57 but I remember our phone number had 2 letters at the start of it, think it was JA2-3282 not old enough for a party line though
I'm 65 and remember party lines and of course the two letter JA for Jackson, WH for Whitehall, TW for Twinbrook, etc.
How much better sheets smelled when hung on a line outside instead of being shoved in a dryer.
When you had to watch your fingers when wringing out clothes on those old style washers with the two roller pins on top that your clothes went through to remove water.
When stoves actually had pilot lights that burned 24/7.
Many homes, like the first one I lived in, had the electric meter INSIDE the house and the meter reader had to come in to check it.
For $1 you could go to the neighborhood show and get in and have enough left over to get a soda and box of popcorn.
Hell, I could do this all day, but I'll spare you folk.

You had to get up to change the tv channel
On that note: no interactive guide menu. Channel 4 scrolling all day.
Nothing was worse than wanting to see what was on channel 30 and when you turned in the guide channel you had just missed it.

That unless you watched a game on tv you had no idea who won until the newspaper came out the next day. And if it finished late, you wouldn’t know until two newspaper cycles. Sportscenter was huge because they gave you national updates but it sucked becuse they didn’t cover all the games so sometimes they’d skip your team.
I’m 29 but I remember as a kid being excited about the Sunday newspaper because it had all the sports scores in it with stats leaders. I would clip them out and save them.

Where I was in GA, in 95, a pack of smokes was $2 even. If you bought Basics, it was $1.25 if you bought a whole carton. $0.99 smokes would have to be earlier than 95. Or maybe you lived in tobacco country?
When I was a kid, it was OK for me to go to the store to buy cigarettes for my dad. They cost $.35 a pack back then for factory made cigarettes, or you could spend $.15 for Bugle or Target tobacco in a pouch that came with papers to roll your own.
The Mom & Pop neighborhood store owner often had 2 or 3 packs of cigarettes open to sell at 2 for $.05, that way he could make $.15 more a pack selling them loose.

When I started in radio, we were still playing records.
Damn near nobody had a home computer.
No cell phones. Pay phones were common.

For $5 back then, she better be half naked when you picked her up. You're being modest.
