A Louisiana state trooper was shot to death while typing reports inside his patrol car early Saturday morning in Prairieville, but another 15 hours would pass before another officer found him unresponsive — a delay that agency leaders called "absolutely unacceptable" and "a perfect storm" of communication failures.

quote:

Davis said the chaos of the manhunt likely led to Gaubert going undiscovered for the next 15 hours. He said troopers were maintaining radio silence during the search, meaning non-emergency radio calls were suspended.

"It created the perfect storm for this to happen," Davis said.

Normally, Gaubert would have signed off around 6 a.m. when his overnight shift ended, telling his colleagues "10-7" over the radio. But those calls are suspended during major emergencies like a manhunt or other critical incident, per agency protocol, Davis said. So the lack of communication from Gaubert raised no red flags.

quote:

The night of his death, officials believe Gaubert had responded to a traffic accident and then parked in a secluded spot behind the Capital One bank off Airline and Jefferson highways to complete his report. It was a totally routine occurrence that had nothing to do with the search for Mire, who had already shot his neighbors in French Settlement around midnight, stolen a pickup truck and headed toward Ascension Parish.

Investigators believe Mire ambushed Gaubert and shot the trooper multiple times before committing another double shooting at a house less than a mile away, Davis said Monday.

Gaubert filed his last police report at 2:21 a.m.

Yeah light this guy on fire and make him suffer as soon as he’s found guilty .

The way I’m taking it is they didn’t suspect him missing because no one was allowed to sign off. So they weren’t looking for him for most of that 15 hours. I could be way off of course.

So what was More doing behind the bank to even see this Trooper? It doesn’t sound like this was a premeditated event.

I think that's right based on what I'm reading.

The trooper had been there for two hours writing a report on a crash.

Mire drove up on him with his lights off and shot him five times. Then he went down the street and did the double shooting

Hopefully they pursue the death penalty in this case.

It was confusing the way it was written, but yea that’s it.

They weren’t looking for him, because they didn’t realize he was missing.

Was he heading in that direction and saw the trooper and decided to kill him before going to his next victims?

Maybe he saw the trooper heading in there before parking and then taking advantage of the situation?

What are the chances do you believe the defense will try to plead an insanity defense?

They always try, but him stopping to execute this cop who he realized presented an existential threat to him before heading on to his real target is great evidence he was rational and calculating as he did these things.

I call BS. When primary channels are suspended, normal traffic goes through other channels. They don't just shut down everything.

The fact this happened in Louisiana tells me it wasn't a perfect storm. It's just the culmination of a police departments' ineptitude. You think this would happen to the Texas Rangers? You think this would even happen to Mississippi or Alabama state police?

What a fricking embarrassment, losing a trooper like this? Radio silence? A fellow officer probably bleeding to death with no fellow officers to check on him? To possible save him? To render any aid.

Dear lord. 15 hours. I think this might be the most embarrassing thing I've seen happen to a police department... Let alone Louisiana's supposed greatest police department??!?

Were they already in the "manhunt radio silence" mode by 6am?
