CO2 emissions have never particularly bothered me but I’m disgusted by how much plastic is consumed today. Hopefully some smart frickers in the future figure out a solution to the giant death bed of plastic floating in the oceans now.

And that packaging will effectively never go away. A styrofoam bowl used for 30 seconds at lunch will remain on Earth for hundreds of thousands of years.
If this cooks your goose, you should look into the thousands of school systems across the country that have done away with the hard plastic trays that needed to be washed everyday for throwaway styrofoam trays, not to mention throw away utensils
ETA: that's for breakfast and lunch

Um, no, plastic is fking awesome.
I don't understand people who live in current year, enjoy all its benefits then ignorantly complain about it.
If you could snap your fingers and make all plastic suddenly disappear Thanos-style, civilization would crumble.

The metal used for support beams in buildings and used to make the car you drive every day, or the change in your pocket will also be around for thousands of years. Why no outrage for metal?

Everyone needs to watch the 60 Minutes episode on the plastic problem that just aired in December (I think).
It was disheartening to hear a guy say that only 10% of plastics produced are recycled and now most of it goes overseas for recycling due to costs.
Worst thing is that it’s mostly going to third world countries in which we know most of it is going into their landfills and not being recycled.
The episode chronicles the plastic problem in the Pacific Ocean.
They do a segment about the plastic washing up in Midway Island.
I was on the island when they were there.

It wouldn't be so bad if people were actually educated on what can and cant be recycled
In my experience, most people feel a sense of altruism just for throwing things in the recycling bin in the first place. They think their minimal effort somehow floats out into the universe to somehow counteract the wasted time/energy from them contaminating the recycling stream.
I'm shocked people aren't out with pitchforks yelling about wasted tax dollars from non-recyclables being put in with recyclables.

Because the pop-culture icons and paid-for Politicians that tell these chicken-littles what to be outraged about haven't gotten around to metal yet.

We're talking about single-use plastics, you doughnut.

The metal in your Tundra will long be gone back to its natural state before the plastic spork from KFC even thinks about breaking down.
Given certain conditions some of these plastic items will never go away.

Make sure to not put pizza boxes in the recycling as most of them are too greasy to recycle and end up messing up everything it touches.

The US isn't dumping thousands of tons of plastic in the the oceans every year. That pollution is coming from South America, Asia and Africa.
If we don't widely practice it at home, how can we try to influence other places?

Gas stations, Wal-Mart etc will bag anything. You can go in to buy a candy bar and they will put it in a giant plastic bag and throw in a long arse receipt.
My daughter's school is recycling plastic bags. They can make a park bench out of it.

Polystyrene is recyclable.

I believe many recyclers accept greasy pizza boxes now.
Just checked our service. No pizza boxes with grease or food residue.
Pizza places need to use better protective sheeting in their boxes to keep grease off the cardboard.

Our recycling can is same size as regular trash can and both get emptied once a week. Our recycling can is overflowing nearly every time I take it down while regular trash is maybe half full. Lots of shite can be recycled

It is ridiculous and something we will have to figure out if we plan on being here another thousand years or so.
I don't think I'll be able to last that long.
