Those are the smart ones.
You know, the ones that will never be flagged for spending three quarters of every day on pinterest and facebook?

This. Who better to cover your tracks than the IT guy? Because you know the boss doesn't know how to track that info. He asks the IT guy.

Separate but somewhat related story...a woman at work was put on Probation and had to go through sexual harassment training because she asked one of the Helpdesk guys, "Whose dick do I have to suck to get a new keyboard?"
Was she overheard by someone or did one of the IT guys actually report that? It's pretty sad if someone wouldn't find humor in that.

And almost every company has a sales rep that can't stand an it guy.
Look my laptop is f$&ked, I have a bunch more miles to drive and six more customers that want to bitch at me because your website and phone system is f$&ed, I don't have time to go thru 43 steps over the phone to fix it.
Why can't I ever just send it back on the first call?
Believe me - the hate for the idiot sales guy that's forever screwing up his laptop is mutual.

Kung Fu's little brother warned us about that in that movie - he said there were a lot more of them (nerds) than there were of us (beautiful people).
I guess he was right...

I've seen this a few times in my shop. Each time it was some young woman from accounting or operations who hated her job and heard IT jobs paid. So they hung around acting like they wanted to learn and get in to IT. On two occurrences they got jobs and were the worst performers on their teams.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I always hear our IT guys complaining about all of the morons who always click on the "Are you horny?" type spam emails and then don't understand why they have viruses.

It's just workplace friendship. Every place has certain people that hang out with other certain people more often. Don't think it's really an IT phenomenon. Unless you think they are just too weird to be socialized with at all? In my experience most IT guys, both software and infrastructure, are pretty normal dudes. Yea they have a few weirdos that are really out there, but most are pretty normal.

people desperately wanting to be something they are not...

The only people I've seen be socially fricked on a regular basis are DBAs.

They make more money, with less training, with more flexible hours and a more relaxed demeanor than 80-90% of other professions.
Oh, and they'll be the ones controlling the automated revolution we're beginning to experience.
Yeah... they've more than won.

Definitely true. Have another one doing it right now. She is enrolled in ITI. Mad because they aren't sitting her down and showing her how to do the work. She is pretty much doomed to fail. They go look up the salary potential and decide they want to do it. Sorry but without a genuine interest in technology you're doomed

Exactly. If you aren't self-motivated and interested with keeping up with things on your own, you are so screwed. I've done well for myself and I haven't even been at it for long, but I enjoy doing what I do. I like having to learn stuff every single day. I have people that are near retirement that are below me, because they have no genuine interest and enthusiasm.

It happens all the time. I had a user open an attachment on a UPS Tracking email one time. The attachment was infected with Cryptolocker, which made alot of file restoration work for me.
I asked the user why they opened that attachment and they just shrugged. They even told me after "It's funny - I didn't even order anything recently to be getting a tracking email."
Yea, ya think??

I'm an IT guy. My employer has 2 major departments who do not always see eye to eye. I've become the official office to "come complain about the other group" or our director. Usually I just sit there, listen, shake my head, and make a sarcastic comment that ultimately helps them absorb whatever BS is going on that day.
I wouldn't say there are any IT groupies in my office but they do kind of worship me when I fix their wireless keyboard (batteries)...
