It appears that the Covid-19 baby boom and divorces aren’t panning out

I recall several threads during the Tiger King portion of the lockdown in March predicting a massive spike in divorces and an unprecedented baby boom.

Here we are in mid November and neither of them are coming to fruition.

My theory back in March and still holds true is that people are going to be too stressed out with these economic and health uncertainties to be having babies and/or going through a divorce.

Divorce is down despite Covid-19

Just FYI, Family Court and appeals were and have been put on the back burner.

I know 3 separate people who's court dates have been pushed until next spring.

I'm pretty sure that the catastrophe-induced birth spike is a myth. For every blizzard that is followed by a birth spike 9 months later, you're equally likely to find a blizzard followed by a dip in birth rates 9 months later.

Why would you file for divorce right now when there is a chance, however slim, that Covid could solve that problem for you?

I personally know several couples that are pregnant right now, and a good friend got divorced because of cheating. Too much time at home, it seems, is a bad thing.

Divorces typically don’t start spiking until after the holidays. Give it time....

The only couples having babies during the lockdown were having their 1st born. Because no one quarantining with kids, said this is great lest have another.

I think the lower divorce rate has more to do with people marrying later in life than they used to.

No one wants to have a kid during a pandemic.

Another problem is that the shutdowns occurred in March-April with 2-3 months still on the school calendar. I bunch of parents became conscripted home-school teachers for the next 2 months, in addition to their actual jobs. Makes more sense that the financial, physical, and emotional stress of the lockdown would incentivize not having more children rather than the other way around.

Threat of job loss makes responsible people less likely to have kids.
