Is YouTube etc influencer a real job

A friend was telling me, this is part of labor shortage.
He claims people are making too much money "online" and not taking manual labor, service jobs.
I told him "I don't know about that".
I have always thought it's kinda like athlete or musician.
Sure a few make bank. Paul bros, Mr beast etc. But, for vast vast majority there really isn't money to be made.
Am I just out of touch?
I just don't see that much demand for such content.

If you can make enough money to support yourself or family. If not, which would be the case for 99% or more, then it’s a hobby or side gig.

If you're good at it and approach it like a job, you can easily pull down 5-6k a month. I did it as a hobby for years and never took it serious and made about $500 a month.
The exceptional are millionaires but that whole industry is toxic as frick. It breaks people.

Yes. It absolutely is a career for a relatively small number of content creators who have enough viewers and sponsors to monetize their pages and make a living doing it. The same is true for every social media.
Editing videos is a lot of tedious work, though.

There is a girl in my town who apparently is making nearly seven figures a year being an Amazon product endorser and instagram influencer. Apparently she is pretty smart at coding and knows to imbed cookies whens someone visits her page or posts and purchases off her website. So long as it can be traced via cooks the buyer merely saw the product on her page, she makes a commission.
And we're all out here grinding 8-5 jobs...

There are definitely people you’ve never heard of who make a decent living doing stuff online you’ll never watch, but I’m not sure it’s a high enough number to skew labor market numbers.
There are certainly people who believe they are viable streamers but in reality are subsidized by either their parents or their spouse while they do what is basically a hobby.

The going rate is about 400 dollars per every 100,000 Youtube video views, which ain't easy to achieve for the average person.

When I was streaming on Twitch, I was pretty niche, but like I said, I pulled down $500 a month with little effort. I was big enough to attract a little sponsor money each month and some affiliate payouts that were just bonus money.
Thing is, I was in the top 3% of earners on Twitch. The crazy money is at the edge of the curve, but you can make a decent living if you're talented and have work ethic. But compared to other industries it's not really worth it for most. I'm sure the top 3% of ditch diggers make a lot more for a lot less hassle.
ETA: For me, all the EXTRA shite just wasn't worth it. The parasocial relationships, maintaining a discord, posting clips, making shorts, tweeting, editing, catering to an audiences wants, playing shite you weren't really into. Just got tiresome.

Depends on what type of content you are creating. Financial oriented channels pull the highest ad rates.

I started a YouTube channel as a joke.
The theme of the channel is I get stoned out of my mind and do chores or maintenance on my tractor or boat, weld, etc. The purpose is to show people how long an actual task takes when you're blazing the whole time.

You can make 6 figures without being an influencer or on camera - just pick a true crime topic and make videos using stock images.
