Which class do you see disappearing between the rich and middle class? I can see the working class trying to seize power in the not-to-distant future.

This idea that service will immediately suck if we do away with tipping and pay them a normal salary is not reality.

I think the key is that "normal salary" has to be reflective of what they're used to making. At least, somewhat close to what they're used to making.

Bar and restaurant shifts are often as low as 4-5 hours. Nobody used to walking with $100+ a shift is going to stick around at $12/hour. So you'll get Burger King caliber employees.

That said, most workers would be hugely in favor of them raising the price of everything by 20% and paying staff what they're used to making now.

The working class has massive amounts of power if they ever get fed up enough. Minimum wage workers could cripple places like NYC simply by moving someplace they could make the same money with 25% the cost of living.

What it really comes down to is that wait staff has been extremely overpaid for a long time. Especially at higher end restaurants. Filling glasses and walking food 50’ isn’t worth $50 an hour.

That may be the case, but you can't undo it without losing the quality of service.

While the work itself may not be hard, nobody is going to suck up to their patrons with a smile for fast food pay. You'll get fast food level service.

Depends on the restaurant. Some higher end restaurants do a terrible job of hiring and training, and their prices should reflect that. Some 19 year old server who I have to open my own bottle of wine for doesn't deserve high end restaurant pay.

My server at Ruth's who knows about the flavor profile of all 300 wines on their wine list absolutely deserves high pay.

That is the thing. If you go above and beyond, you deserve a tip as a waiter.

We went to a restaurant in Charleston called 82 Queen. The waiter was personable, knowledgeable, and even went so far as to tell us what isn’t the best items on the menu.

I appreciate that.

I was thinking the working class would just take over. They will take over the facilities that they work for and share the profits. If they ever tire of their plight and stick together then nothing could stop them.

The problem with that is that most places would soon collapse if they were run by your typical McDonalds worker. There would be no profit to share.

You are likely correct.

I said I tip inTS when I got drinks, and errbody DV the post.

Tipping needs to go away. It is complete bullshite that the customer is expected to subsidies the employees of the business you are receiving service from.

I go to the same place for lunch once or twice a week. They know my name, know my order and are always super quick and helpful. While it is a stand-up to order place, I usually leave a 13-15% tip.
I’ll assume your lunch is 20 bucks for the sake of the math. 15% is $3. 20% is $4. Is that dollar really changing your day/life? Because times however many meals that server is delivering it is absolutely changing his/hers
