I tip based on the service provided. If horrible 0% and a note explaining why, if it's bad 10%, great service here you 25%. My main judge in the service is how long my glass is empty, followed by attitude.

You know what they say about Internet arguments being like the special olympics....
I'm sure things will turn around for ya. If throwing someone who is more than likely a student or struggling parent a buck or two is being foolish with money then so be it.

I ate at a handful of Michelin Guide restaurants in Positano. 1-2 apps, shared primi, each our own secondi, and a nice bottle of wine never put me more than €130.
Comparable in the states would be $175-$180 plus a $36 tip. Probably $200 plus tip after the expensive fricking wine from which we have to choose.
The winery 100 miles away is BS, if you're trying to make a point. You think People in Sonoma are getting outstanding wines at €22? Yeah right!

Delivery or at a restaurant I go 20%. Tipping for a pick up order is heresy. You tip for the service, not the sandwich

If I'm picking something up and the clerk is pretty or extremely nice, I tip a buck. Otherwise I usually tip 20%.

This is a thread full of assholes. Just call it like it is. Do you enjoy going out to eat? These people are providing a service. We are a service based economy. If everyone of these servers goes and "gets a better job" like you ppl are bound to say, then the restaurant industry will fail.
If I got to Cane's, walk up to the counter, and tell the cashier my order, they don't expect a tip. If I go to Izzo's, walk up to the counter and tell that person my order, they expect a tip?
I live by the "is there a choice" model. If I can walk into a pizza place and pick up my order, then I won't tip if I choose that option. But if they deliver, then I will tip. If I pull into Sonic, and there's no option, then I'm not tipping.
When I go online to place a to-go order, why should I tip when I pick it up?
I will agree that being a regular has its advantages. If you want those advantages, then you better tip well.

Forget restaurants, I was with my aunt at the airport(jfk) and she has trouble walking long distances the wheelchair agent pushed her damn near 1 mile to baggage claim and skipped us ahead in the taxi queue. My aunt handed the man $5.
I was embarrassed and had to run and catch the guy as he was leaving and give him another $20. People who don't tip/undertip are the worst.

You're trashy. If you don't want to tip, don't eat out and have someone cook for you, clean up after you, make your drinks, and serve you. Eat at home or get to-food.

Ah I'm generally in a good mood. The tipping complaint/debate bothers me though, no one forces people to eat out and you choose what you order, so complaining about it is dumb imo.
And yes I worked in the industry briefly but even before I did my parents taught me how to tip just like they taught me how to balance a checkbook, pay bills, etc

Admitting you're a cheapskate is the first step
When I go to sit down places I tip 20-25% for good service. Even more for exceptional service.
If I walk in and all you do is take my money and hand me a bag, you don't deserve anything special.
