I'm not sure but I don't think that is exactly true.

What's min wage $7.25/hour ?

Let's say you are getting paid $2.25 per hour. Well the restaurant is supposed to guarantee you make the $5 per hour in tips to make up the minimum wage.

I would say majority of the time most will make up that gap but there will be some days you make below it and others above. Doesn't make it any less shitty when you have assholes that don't tip just because they hate the economy they restaurants and bars play in and it's their way to boycott it. And yes people are that stupid, just read this thread.

The issue with the "restaurant is federally mandated to make sure that you are paid at least minimum wage" is that say to make up the $5/hr gap, if your food sales are say $300, well the computer system may be set to automatically make you claim a certain percentage in tips (for IRS purposes, even if it doesn't show that much on your credit Card tips). So on that $300 in sales, the positouch or Micros or whatever point-of-sale, say you only made $20 and go to claim that as you are clocking out, but BAM it won't let you clock out. Reason why? The system is set up at a threshold at maybe 10% at the least. Saying that you need to claim more for the IRS and that on $300 in sales they KNOW you made at least $30. So then you can't clock out and go home after smelling like food and alcohol and dealing with cheap idiots all night, until you put in the a number that satisfies the system/rest/IRS...... I mean they have to save the server from not claiming enough money and have the IRS come after them for tax evasion right?!!!..... just so happens that the arbitrary number happens to push that server over th $7.25/hr mark

I tip 20% pretty much all the time but I can't remember the last time I've had bad service either.

Around the holidays I'll up it especially to my regular wait staff

You would think right. When I clocked out I was pretty much forced to report a minimum of a certain amount in tips in order to ensure I made minimum wage, or I couldn't leave. I always worked evenings, so this was never an issue.

But every once in a while someone from the lunch crowd would insist they only made X amount in tips. They had two options at that point. Report more than they made and move on (the usual option), or complain to management.

Doing the latter yielded one of two results: They let them clock out this one time, or they just fire them for whatever creative reason they can find. In which case its on the now unemployed server to hire a lawyer to prove something that's almost impossible to prove.

I tip based on the quality of service I receive, after all I had to work for the money I tip with and if my waiter/waitress wants a 20-25% tip they need to earn it. By them earning it I'm talking about my glass of tea not running out, getting silverware on time, making sure we have bread, and other items on the table.

I have never left without tipping but in a couple of places I did leave 2 pennies on the table and that should have sent a message. One of those times I left 2 cents we were in a restaurant (not really upscale but really decent) and they served our food about 8 minutes before the silverware arrived.

If I am going to drive somewhere and pick up my food I'm not tipping you bc you put it in a plastic bag and handed it to me.

I'm always unsure when I get takeout. I usually tip $1. When I have a meal at a restaurant I usually tip 18-20% for average service and a bit more for great service or if my table asked a lot out of the waiter or waitress. I've left smaller tips on the rare occasions that I've been pissed off. Me and a few coworkers went to a burger place for lunch a month or so back and they f'ed up our order and took an hour to bring our food. Two of us missed a meeting and I didn't tip shite.

I know your idea of pick up is at Chilis or BWW, but what about guys like me that pick up from the bar and grill we go to 3 or 4 times a week? Been going there for 5 years and know everyone there. Is it wrong to give them a nice tip? They are the bartenders that give me a stiff drink or treat me to a drink from time to time.

How about the mom and pop places where I know the families? I kind of like to take care of those people.

This this this.
I guess it depends on what kind of places you are eating at and what kind of customer you are.
I've had one bad experience in the last five years.

Meals were no more expensive there than they are here in New Orleans. Usually cheaper.

I've spent Months of my life in Europe. I've been to almost every country in Western Europe. I also worked in the service industry in New Orleans for a long time. I'll be the first to tell you that this isn't true at all. Restaurant food is definitely more expensive in Europe.

Such a fricking crock

So, a restaurant wouldn't charge more for food if they had to start paying their employees minimum wage? I have a hard believing that you actually believe that.

wine was 1/5 the price

Yeah, you're in the largest wine producing area of the world. The wine you were drinking probably came from a vineyard less than 100 miles away.

Tipping needs to go away. Figure out your damn costs and charge the price on the menu to cover that and your desired profit. Frick paying 20% on a bill that's half drinks that are marked up 200% for half arse device. Have an app or something for ranking food, service etc and distribute bonuses accordingly. Tips feel like extortion after you just charged me $50 for a salad and two drinks whose actual value is about $8.
