Do you sit and wait and then hand the tip to them? I just leave the receipt on the table and gtfo.

no matter where (even pick up), they expect you to tip. We love eating out but tip based on merit, yet these guys glare at even a 10% tip. When did these servant class scum get so spoiled?
If you're too broke to tip then you shouldn't go out to eat. And you probably don't get good service because you act like a prick and treat them like servant class scum.

I don't understand the rationale for tipping for pick up. Who are you tipping? If you're tipping the kitchen, I can understand, but when you dine in you're tipping the server, not the kitchen. The server doesn't do anything more than bag your order, which is not worthy of a tip, IMO.

Are you black? Just curious...

If you sit down, yes you should tip 20%. If you pick it up and all they do is hand you your food then swipe your card, no. I've scratched through the tip before if they suck.

I am at 15% at restaurants. I don't tip at a walk up and order joints. I don't like the "supplement my labor" model for the owner.

This is a thread full of assholes. Just call it like it is. Do you enjoy going out to eat? These people are providing a service. We are a service based economy. If everyone of these servers goes and "gets a better job" like you ppl are bound to say, then the restaurant industry will fail.

I give the tip to a waitress

I'm not blaming you. I know the restaurant industry sucks. Believe me, I hate it too. What I'm saying is that this social experiment of not tipping on principle doesn't help anyone.

and another thing
the percentage tip is beyond stupid
a person does a great job serving me a $20 entrée. that person gets a whole lot less tip than the person serving me an $80 entrée.
how dumb is that?

Keeping menu prices low and not paying employees minimum wage or higher is also a choice. Don't complain when restaurants put an end to all the tipping stuff and start selling a hamburger for $20.
Such a fricking crock. I just spent two weeks in Italy. Meals were no more expensive there than they are here in New Orleans. Usually cheaper. Except wine was 1/5 the price and tipping was 2 to 3 euros versus me adding another $20-$40 at the end.

You tip 20% for carry out, Big O? Wow, they literally hand me a bag through a window or at the front door. I am not getting refills or condiments or anything else. Just food. Do you tip 20% at McDonalds and Burger King and Chik-Fil-A? That thought has never crossed my mind.
