TJ is awesome, but definitely not for the faint of heart.

Never been, when I was in the military we were banned from going there.

Tijuana is not safe for gringos.........
If you look like you have money, you will not return home without a ransom payment.

I was in San Diego for a bachelor party in October, two of us made the trip down to TJ.
Happy hour in Gas Lamp on a Thursday > Random Mexican lady giving us a ride to the border > Drinks at Caesars > Scoring 2 8 balls from a local at the bar > Stumbling around Zona Norte looking for Hong Kong > Getting into a scuffle one block away and retreating to a dive bar to cool off > Getting separated as I went off with a local girl who spoke no English > Me running out of cash (left wallet in US) and senorita ghosting me > Losing my cell phone > Paying some random Mexican $100 (when we got to hotel) to drive me back to Gas Lamp > Meeting up with rest of crew Friday and continuing the party in San Diego > Other guy stays in TJ for 48 hours doing blow and banging hookers at Hong Kong and another massage place a few blocks away.
Blow? Yes
Hookers? Yes
Donkey show? Not sure
Safety? Two nearly blacked out drunk gringos managed to stumble around for 4 hours and 48 hours respectively while chasing hookers and blow and neither of them were robbed or murdered.

blah, blah, blah... all-inclusive resorts are likely more up your alley. Or maybe go nuts and hit Margaritaville or Bubba Gump in Cancun.

In case anyone reading this is actually going to TJ, the North-South road Ave Revolucion has numerous restaurants, bars, clubs, and a casino or two. This is a perfectly safe area to walk up and down the block, similar to Bourbon St.

Caesar's is a classy restaurant and the home of the original Caesar salad.
A few blocks north is the Zona Norte, or red light district, mainly on the East-West streets of Calle Coahuila and Calle Benito Juarez. Hong Kong is the most famous gentleman's club (aka brothel) but there are many small clubs, hotels, and massage places in these blocks where the hookers stand out front and take you upstairs for a small fee.

The links are to google maps.

Sounds like the El Torito Restaurant in Irvine, CA is more your speed.

It was ok 15 years ago. Not sure about now. It had pharmacy stands all over the place and the bars were interesting to say the least. I got a good deal on a piñata and a 2 ft. tall Bart Simpson piggy bank at some flea market kind of thing. My cell phone got hacked while I was there.

I haven't been in like 9 years, but I've made the trip a handful of times. there have always been stories about the cops robbing people, but we never had any problems. if you catch a cab right at the border, and go straight to a bar on revolution, and then take a cab right back to the border, you will probably be ok. I think trouble starts when you start wandering around.
fwiw, I've heard its gotten a lot worse there over the last 5 years or so, but in regards to local crime, not necessarily police fricking with gringos.

When I got robbed by the cops, it was 9am and I was still wondering around, coked up, looking for a place to keep drinking.

I was down there with a group of friends in the 80's. After a day on the beach and much tequila, a friend wander off from the from bar we were at. He wandered back to our rental a few hours later with a nice sized welt on his face.
"His story" was that he was stopped and held-up by some Federales for drunken and disorderly. They shoved a gun into his ribs and asked for everything he had. He only had a handful of pesos so they took the money and punched him cold and stole his watch.
That's his story at least. He did have an impressive bruise and his Rolex was missing. Who knows, he could have gotten a hooker whose pimp held him up for all we know.
