Almost ALL contracting firms, especially specialty contracting firms, were stated initially by tradesmen skilled in the trade with some business sense. Many have morphed into multinational conglomerates ran by folks with stacks of papers proving they have been educated as well as money can do but they were initially started by some old boy with some skills and some balls....

my dad was a general contractor, huge business back in the day, I can't remember how many guys that worked for him that tried to branch out and try to start their own business, because "why should he make all of this money when I'm the one doing the work?" he even helped some of them get started, a few were able to make a living but most of them folded and either came back asking for their job back or went to another contractor because they didn't have the business ability and in some cases the guts to be a business owner and put in the work it takes to run a successful business

This is going to be buried six pages back, but maybe you luck up and see this.

I'm not sure of all the schools that offer the program, but get an Associates's in Process Technology from somewhere like Nunez. It's cheap, only 2 years, and worth more than a lot of Master's. You will have a decent shot at 60k to 70k by the time you can drink and probably clearing 100k by 25.

You are spot on of course...very few people from any walk of life have what it takes to start a small business from scratch and make it successful for any length of time. Was your dad a tradesman when he started?

not in the sense that he went to a tech school to learn a trade, he had a full time job, not construction related, and started doing things that he knew how to do on the side, he learned what was involved in all of the crafts that it took to complete jobs, realized that it wasn't necessary for him to actually perform those tasks personally, he also realized how important it was to know business, accounting, law, insurance, etc., and bought textbooks and self educated himself on those subjects and more

yea since so many in the trades are just pulling down 6 figures

you are only making 6 figures in the trade if you own the business or you work a ton of turnarounds.

yall over inflate what peopel make so much its not even funny.

i worked in the trades for years before i went back and finished my degree and am a certified pipefitter. I now deal with tradecraft all day and see the pay rates as part of my job....yall are full of shite!!

OP..you need to know...its hot as hell out there, the work sucks at times, the people you work with are usually pretty shitty people who made terrible life choices.....but if you are smart and are willing to work your arse off, in about 8-10 years you can open your business and make more than you ever would have getting a normal college degree.

if you dont work your arse off and atleast move into management, it can be a very hard life of working in the heat for the next 40 years.

oh and start putting money in a roth IRA immediately, max it out every year. Start putting 8% in 401k from day 1 too.

if you consider operations or instrumentation a trade...then go for that but i will say its very competitive.

if not go be a machinist if you dont think you can own your own business. if wanting to stay in a building trade, do hvac or electrical.

all these idiots talking about 6 figures...maybe 10 years experience and a ton of OT if you are working for others. just google median salary for each for louisiana and you will see. Most of the people on this board are full of complete shite when it comes to pay, especially when it comes to pay for the trades.

You are a fricking moron.

#1. You assume everyone has the same goal in life.

#2.Unless you want to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, teacher, accountant. And a few others I am missing, I can easily argue the best route would be to go to a trade school instead of college.

There are people who didn't graduate HS who would probably laugh at what you make... Since that's seems to be what identifies you.

A drafter/designer can make really good money especially if they travel around for work.

I worked for a company that brought in a certain amount of their people, most of them.. That's what they did. The company had/has projects all over. There was this one guy who traveled to work for 6 months then went back home and bought, fixed up and flipped houses. Well, he said he would usually do 2 or 3 in that time. He was in his 50s, but he was talking about how he was 23-24 when he started working for the company. He had a GED. Worked construction and at 21 became a bartender, realized he needed to get a real job. Got a job out in the field and at the time we worked together, he was a project manager.

I'd say if someone knows what it is they can do, they are competent, smart workers with some ambition, that is more valuable that a college degree. Of course I didn't think that when I was in college.

Saw this story the other day, a 68 year old engineer worked at the same company for 50 years and never went to college.

cnbc.com

Everyone thinking they have to go to college has been responsible for a lot of debt.

you mean making a good living, without having to destroy your body? yea that should be pretty much everyone's goal

might be right but there are ton of other avenues and careers that require a degree, any degree. there is a reason people with a degree make way more money over the course of a career.

no shite, but again we are talking numbers here. fact is those with a bachelors make more over a career on average.

and i didnt tell the OP to go to college. he apparently isnt college material. he is struggling with high school.

yea no shite, but to be a designer now a days you need to get an associates 99% of the time to even get a look.

and OP said he didnt want to move nor travel. read the thread before you call someone a moron.

i specifically mentioned you can make 6 figures if you want o travel.

who gives a frick about a 1 off.

then he wasnt an engineer because you cant be without an engineering degree.

1) college can be done, atleast in LA, with very little debt

2) i didnt tell op to go to college. Before you start calling people out, maybe your dumbass should learn to read

i said...dont expect 6 figures. expect to work in the heat(op syas he lives in middle of no where and doesnt want to move and is looking at plumbing and electrical) and to have to work his arse off

then i told him how to retire successfully. before you call someone "a fricking moron" you might want to learn to read.

how about go find one thing i said that was incorrect before calling me a moron.

ftr i worked in the trades for over a decade and am a certified pipe fitter then went back and finished school.

1. Go for something you truly enjoy doing don’t do it only for money.

2. Make sure you are aware of what your job will pay after you graduate.

I know I probably shouldn't drop out and atleast get my diploma. Whenever I do try in school I do really good, im in honors classes, and I know computer programming pretty well, I'm good at it and I like it but I think of it more as a hobby, already struggling enough to not fail out of boredom. Cant do school honestly its the worst.

Not lazy but school is so miserable for me and I cannot really imagine myself with a desk job, I struggle to pay attention in class. Most of my bad grades come from just not doing work, I do good on test. I understand that I should do it but school genuinely makes me miserable.

Just put your heart into whatever vocation you decide to pursue and focus. Study hard, because unlike high school, you will be taught only what you need to excell in your trade.
Best of luck to you!

Don’t get in debt. Plumbers can work the jobs they want to work. Print money.
