you need to do more research than posting on this place, you can't just blow off things that you need to learn in the classroom just because you don't like it, that's probably the majority of hs school sophomores, you can live hand to mouth for the rest of your life if you just blow off education and think all you need is baw skills, much better to know how to do the grunt work and be the boss than have no other option than to be the grunt

Most IBEW and UA locals will take just about anyone who can sign an application. They need bodies terribly. It used to be an old boys club, it ain't no more, at least not in most locals.

Just thought since tiger droppings is generally local I'd post here and ask about it. Not trying to blow off education but school makes me miserable. Still keeping my grades up the best I can but it is a struggle.

na didnt you know, every south louisiana coonass makes 6 figures being in the trades.

people on this board are so full of frickin shite when it comes to the trades. most have nothing to do with the trades and read a headline and have this romantic notion of working with your hands all day. they rail against people going to college like it is so so so common, yet only about 25% have a degree. they act like everyone has one and is just working at McDonalds with it.

The work is FASCINATING and requires a LOAD of knowledge to be a fully competent journeyman...a proper millwright is as close to an actual engineer as modern tradesmen or engineers get...the amount of knowledge used by millwrights is staggering.

you are a sophomore in hs, it probably seems like time is standing still for you take it in stride and take every opportunity to learn, education gives you the ability to make educated decisions, before you know it hs will be over and life will start

The only thing you should know is how much better off financially you will be than people who take out student loans. Start putting into retirement as early as possible too

LSU777 is 100% correct...very few tradesmen in any area making $100k a year. I doubt seriously if ANY electrician, plumber or the like is doing so in Louisiana and NOT working what would amount to nearly 2 years for most people every year...7-12s is 4 hours more a week than having 2 full time jobs. Working OT is a problem in the trades...if a person is not interested in working 6 and 7 days a week 10-12 hours a day they will have a hard time in the trades most likely.

You should also know you don’t need student loans to attend college if you don’t choose to take them out.

You are a HS sophomore, don’t make any choices now that severely limit your options in a few years.

So here is an idea...if you do not have any family members who can hire you part time in any trade ask around. Most people need some help and you will learn some valuable skills. They aren't going to let you do much more than sweep floors and the like but the more you show up the more they will ask you to hand them a tool or go get a piece of material and the next thing you know your doing some real work and learning as you do.

look, want to know...you will struggle financially at first going to the trades(I still think operations and instrument tech are 1A/1B and millwright/machinist are 2A/2B) but if you do the following, about a 90% chance you end up middle to upper middle class by the time you are 50

1) do not have kids until you are 27-28

2) do not get married before 25

3) do not buy a new vehicle until you get married, drive one that is paid off

4) start putting $6,500 in a Roth IRA immediately. every year no matter what!!! Have it come out your check. until you make too much where you cant do this...never ever ever stop doing this.

5) start putting $100/week in 401k immediately. Every year, no matter what. And every time you get a raise, add $20 to that amount you put in weekly. Never ever stop doing this.

6) dont gamble, do drugs and dont drink during the week.

7) finish high school.

do the 7 things above and you will be successful no matter what. Life will be hard, you will work your arse off in the heat, you will struggle to make ends meet at times, but in the end you will be successful

other advice, find a good school district and buy a piece of land, then a trailer eventually and put it on there as early as you can or buy a small 125k house and fix it up. Stay until you are atleast 30+

just remember too when its 98 in july.....you choose this life.

they don't wanna talk about that

i will say the lifestyle operations and instrument tech guys have...are good ones but the shift work sucks. and to make really good money, you have to work lots of overtime. and now a days, its hard to get hired without a ptech degree which isn't trade school, same with instrumentation degree. in fact almost impossible.

if you can get hired as a tradesman by a plant..its a good life... as the retirement is good.

the rest...both in the plants, the supporting trades, and the building trades suck dick. you will end up like PeeJ living in a falling down trailer in Denham springs beggin people on here to send you $20 and faking cancer.

seems like it's pretty common for high schools to offer college courses and in a lot of places kids, if they want to go that route, are graduating from hs with associates degrees, if OP is dead set on not going to college he should be soaking up that opportunity like a sponge

My nephew graduated hs in 2019. Received a scholarship to a diesel mechanic school in Houston. 100% job placement when finished. Went to work at a diesel dealership for $62k at 20 years old. One job move later and he's making around $75k.Not bad for a kid under 24 years old.

That's fine, but the ceiling might be low. Are his prospects going to dwindle or stay flat? It's diesel, what happend with the push to electric? Sounds like hard work for modest pay as one grows older.
