Is there an advantage to buying a car out of state?

Other than maybe a better price? Are there tax advantages?

There's a truck in AL that I want, but I can get the same truck in Baton Rouge for about $800 more. I'm not sure it's worth the hassle if there isn't a tax advantage. TIA.

Why would there be a tax advantage? You pay taxes based on where the vehicle is registered, not where you buy it.

You pay registration and taxes when you register it at your home address. There's no advantage to buying out of state unless you obviously find a better deal there.

My friend set up a personal LLC registered in Montana. Buys local but registers in Montana. No sales tax, cheap registration, no inspection. Uses depreciation for taxes

So where does he tell his insurance company the vehicle is garaged?

There's no advantages but sometimes you find some good deals out of state. I once got a car all the way in Miami because the deal was really good. It was summer vacation from college and I needed a new vehicle. There was a Volvo S70 with only 20,000 miles on it that I won for 3 grand on an ebay auction. It being in Miami wasn't a big deal, we just made a little vacation out of it and stayed in Miami/Ft Lauderdale for a bit after picking it up and then made our way back home. Was all worth it.

Not sure I would travel to Alabama just to save $800 on a car you could buy local though.

if you find a $3000 difference, and $200 plane ticket, and don't mind the drive home...

they can process the paperwork and you'll pay taxes as a separate transaction, but it's worth it to me.

I'll go anywhere in CONUS

It’s only worth the hassle if you spend a lot on cars

Your car can not be registered in one state and insured in another. Insuring your car in a state where you don't reside is fraud
