Your car can not be registered in one state and insured in another. Insuring your car in a state where you don't reside is fraud

This is not close to a universal truth.

they might give you a more competitive price in a large city with more competition but they will charge you LA taxes regardless unless you register it in the state you are purchasing it.

There's a truck in AL that I want, but I can get the same truck in Baton Rouge for about $800 more

Are you planning to pay sticker price? Keep shopping around to see if you can find an ever better deal. They may not match, but if the dealer really wants your money and there is a chance you could go somewhere close 9espeically a few hours away like AL) they will come down or throw in some extras.

When that state trooper pulls him over asks for registration and proof of insurance that shows MT and he has a louisiana state drivers license with MT tags. The local judge and DA are going to love seeing his arse in court.

The Montana supercar loophole has mostly been closed, from what I understand. When it was effective, something like 80% of the supercars in the US were registered in Montana.

I been buying my New trucks in Texas (Houston, Katy) because it saves me several thousand dollars (they deal in volume). Car dealers in Louisiana can't hang with Texas.
