Once upon a time, I think there was a "subscribe" feature on a thread which would give you email notifications whenever someone replied to the thread (not necessarily replied to YOUR post, just any reply in the thread).
I accidentally subscribed to a thread that went several pages once, and my inbox blew up with notifications.
