This is how I usually do it. This time though, we were faced with dropping ~$1,500 on her car this week to repair it, when we were already sort of looking for something new for her. This news came Friday a little after lunch, so we decided to move up the car buying on our schedule and buy one this weekend.

We had a budget and she had a general idea what she wanted. This place had several on their lot she liked, but she wanted to drive them first before making a final decision. That part is totally on us, and is something we would have done more efficiently had we not been on a tight schedule to get her into something.

It still took 3 hours from the time we decided on the vehicle to the time we left the car lot. And this was after we had already been pre-approved for financing. But I have since learned that the pre-qualifying doesn't really mean shite.

"So you test drove 5-6 vehicles, yet you’re complaining about it taking too long? I have no issue with test driving as many vehicles as you need to so you can confirm you’re getting the right one, but that’s not the dealerships fault, that’s YOURS. Typical liberal democrat though. Can’t ever shoulder any responsibility, it’s always someone else’s fault"

Reading comprehension is such a lost art these days.

to be fair we did test drive 5 different cars before settling on one so some of that is on us.

Traded my 2019 Ram w 60k Friday. Was there for. 20min. They drove my truck and offered $31k, 18k difference with no interest for the Ram 2021. I didn't get any free goods like Tonneo cover or leather. I paid $38k for this 2019 in Sept 2018.

If it takes more than an hr I leave.

I already know what I want, what I’m willing to finance, and my interest rate before I set foot in the door.

If I don’t already have my financing done and they try a few different finance options I might stay 2 hrs otherwise I’m gone

When I was around 20, my buddy and his dad would spend weekends going around to dealerships, with no intention to buy, and test drive, and haggle the price till the salesmen were pulling their hair out. I haven't done it in a few years, but I bought vehicles on two occasions where they vacillated between begging me to sign and wondering if they should outright cuss me. Next time I buy one I'm going to go in pre-approved and just keep telling them I won't take their offer on my trade or they can do a better deal on the price. Just keep on fricking with them.
How dumb and what a collosal waste of time. And I might add quite immature as well.

It’s the worst. Wife and I currently drive 2008 and 2010 model cars. Thinking of replacing the 2008 with a new minivan. Found myself out by a dealership and thought I’d like to go sit in the new sienna. Told the guy I’m not buying, wife isn’t here, would just like to sit in a sienna and mess with the seats for a few minutes.

“Ok let’s take a look and then see if we can get paperwork started.”

“No really. I’m just going to sit in the car to see if this is something we’d like to purchase this summer.”

“No problem. And hey if you want to patch in the wife so we can start some paper work not a problem.”

And on and on in went as I fiddled with the third row. I am somewhat looking forward to seeing my wife interact with a car dealership. She has zero patience for salemenship, has zero interest in anything fashion and has never bought a car before. It’s going to be a terrific spectacle that ends with us walking out after 6 futile hours and just buying a used car from enterprise for cash on the drive home.

Bought a new car in August. Did everything online via four emails with dealership. Spent an hour filling out the paperwork and that was it.

Whew. I've never been more than an hour, not including the test drive. You just have to have your price and be firm about it.

Some asswipe tried this line on me after giving me a price higher than was advertised online and before we had even talked about trade values. I told him not to lie to me me as they would be out of business selling cars at a loss, and he got pissed off. I got a call from his manager to tell me his guy was not a liar, so I said guess that makes you a liar too. Really weird business model Ray Brandt dealers use. I'm sure it will shock you to know we spent our money elsewhere.
With incentives and volume they sure can sell a vehicle at lower than cost and still make money.

I've never seen emptier lots. I think Biden is outlawing gas pick ups already.

1.never be in a hurry when buying a car.
2. Test drive and figure out what vehicle you want first.
3. Get pre-approved from your credit union.
4. Look in the internet and find 3 or 4 vehicles that are what you want. Make offers and sit back and relax. One of them will take your offer.

You forgot rule #1.

The key to it is just keep saying no and go home. They will call you back with a better deal.

That wouldn't explain them advertising the vehicle at $35k online and then quoting me $37k when I inquired through the website; and then giving me that BS excuse for why the price was higher than advertised

I'd be interested in seeing if high volume dealers advertise prices that would lose them money on a singular deal. Doesn't seem sustainable to me, but maybe.

Every lot gave me the same reason: no computer chips to finish the cars. They have cars built without computers.
