Highlander

Based on a Toyota Camry.

The Highlander competes with the Honda Pilot, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia. It does not compete with the Tahoe, Suburban, Armada, Sequoia, or Land Cruiser.

ehh, i think where toyota is really disappointing is on their interiors across the board.

4Runner doesn't even offer automatic liftgate, which isn't that big of a deal, but is just a microcosm of how much the engineers don't think about small luxuries. Same goes with their idiotic auto start feature... that kills once you unlock the vehicle.

Toyota designs in general kind of suck, but I didn't think the Tundra or Sequoia were bad. The latest Camry, Prius, Avalon, Rav4, and C-HR are all hideous.

I'm worried they'll screw up the Sequoia and Tundra when they redesign it. They are older designs, but they aren't ugly to me.

Toyota should hire designers from Mazda. Mazda is designing some great looking vehicles.

I never hated the design of the Sequoia, but honestly I can't remember the last time I saw a brand new one on the road.

And Toyota used to make some of the best. Witness greatness:

Instead, they offer a big bloated... minivan, but with four doors.

Where do you people come up with this shite? The highlander is the "minivan" SUV of Toyota's lineup. How many minivans do you know of with RWD and a big V8 and a truck frame?

I used "minivan" to evoke imagery of boring meh vehicles, which is the essence of a Sequoia.

Probably recently, but they haven't been redesigned in almost a decade. So it's hard to notice

The design looks better on the Sequoia than it does on the Tundra imo.

Exactly why I bought mine. I don't need to pay extra to open and close the lift gate. My arms work just fine.

Agree. You have to get a Lexus to get a decent interior from them.

If they updated the powertrain and suspension and slapped the current body on top they'd have a great truck. Even though it's a 10 year old truck, I don't think the (2014 and up) Tundra looks outdated at all. Pre-2014 and Sequoia front clips aren't exactly attractive.

The limited/platinum Highlanders are over 40k (if I'm not mistaken). But I misunderstood OP I guess, he mean a vehicle that rides like the 4runner and Land Cruiser which I agree the Highlander is a different market.

It's definitely not a vehicle one would brag about owning.

I'm going to talk out of both sides of my mouth here, BUT: Toyota builds for reliability, not luxury. If it can fail easily they won't add it. The $85k Land Cruiser just got a power lift gate for the 2018 model year. The infotainment system in that vehicle is still ancient, and terrible. That said, my Cayenne is a 2011 and still feels like it's from the future. Of course it has a power lift gate. And features that I'm still discovering - I owned it for a year before I knew it could display the speed limit on the dash display. If Porsche can figure out how to make something reliable and full of features, surely Toyota can too.

Power lift gates, automatic headlights, and modern infotainment systems are not things that typically break on any vehicle.

Seems like they are trying to keep costs down.

Crazy how mazdas were dogshit in the earlier part of the 2000s and now I think they make better looking and better driving cars than any manufacturer in their segment. Their suvs are awesome.

It's a 3 row crossover, which makes it essentially a minivan. Totally different animal from the 4Runner, Tahoe, Land Cruiser, etc.
