as long as you didn't buy their smoke detector

NEST Recall

its ok, though right? that cool hand wave feature you bought it for that was disabled over a year ago has already been re-enabled by now right?

WRONG

quote:

Will Nest Wave be re-enabled?

Not at this time. Nest Protects sold on or after June 16 are fully functioning smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and do not have the Nest Wave feature enabled.

quote:

How do I silence alarms?

If you get a Heads-Up alert for smoke or carbon monoxide, Nest Protect can still be hushed. Simply press the Nest button - we made it large, so it's easy to hit.

you mean like those $19 units kidde has been pumping out for 40 years?

eta, $80 from MS WORLD III on amazon marketplace. This guy is legit. He gets a ton of these OEM units and I've bought 6 from him (2 for old house, 2 for new house and 2 as gifts)

CAD, appreciate the info. I'll likely go this route as it's hard for me to justify $250 for a thermostat.

Happy to answer installation questions. I've installed 6.. Everything from Propane gas hvac to an ancient heat pump and a couple units didn't have a c wire (required by both nest and Honeywell) so I can solve that problem for you for less than $30.

I had 2 units at my house so $140 was alot better than $500.

Ms world prices range from $60-$80 but he always has a few for sale at amazon.

My AC only has two wires. How do you work around this?

Yes- I can't compare it to the Honeywell but the Nest has been great for us. My favorite part is the app I use when I forgot to turn off the A/C or when I am on my way home and want to cool the house before I get there.

you don't have a wire for the fan or for heat?

Snap a pic. You should have at least 4 wires.

Installed these myself 6 months ago. A buddy works in the AC business and got them for me for free. I have two units and so far they are amazing. No issues at all. [/img]

Nest sucks. I was in your shoes as well b/c my original thermostat went out.

Example: Every night at 6pm you and your wife are home eating dinner so you set your Nest to say 70F. Well, if the week before you were out eating everynight and decided to save electricity by turning up the temp to 80F then all of a sudden, while you're at home eating you notice it's getting hot in your house. Why? B/c Nest is thinking you are gone and reverts back to the last weeks setting.

It is handy for digital control (ie. iPad/iPhone) - I'll give it praise for that and that alone.

I have it and love it. It learned our routine pretty well and I noticed a drop in our bills.

Its worth the price alone due to being able to turn on the AC from my bed.

why not spend $70 for that functionality instead of $250?

is the purty color LED screen worth the extra $180?

That's the one I got. im a few days in and like it a lot. I set a pretty good schedule so I don't have to think about the a/c at all.

Isn't that model just as expensive as a Nest?

ETA: Nevermind. Just read you got them for free from a buddy.

Are MS World's new or used? The condition says 'Used- Good', but I don't know if I want a used/reconditioned thermostat.

I just watched a video on installing the Honeywell thermostat, then I checked my current setup- I've got the 5 wires already run, so it looks simple. Is it, CAD?

I saw a kickstarter awhile back for thermoneystat
Ignoring the lame name, you put in a budget and some info and it allegedly most efficiently cools your house centered around a financial goal

Sounded interesting but not trying to be first adapter. Anyone heard of it?

My bad. It has four wires connected to c,r,1 and 2. Still not compatible with older thermostats.

Complete BS. Seriously doubt you ever had one. I have a Nest. It doesn't change your schedule because you changed the temperature a couple of times.

Not to mention you would be doing it wrong anyway. You are supposed to let it detect that you are not home on its own.

It also knows when you are home and when you aren't. It wouldn't turn it up to 80 while you were home.
