A smash and grab? What if someone runs over the mom in th parking lot while she's carrying her infant into the daycare? I can come up with plenty of what ifs that are just as bad if not worse than leaving the kid in the car in that situation.
Great post. Our fears and concerns are rarely rational. We don't have PSAs and news reports to warn mothers not to drive their cars or stop at gas stations or stores in high crime areas, but we have PSAs and reports over hot cars and child safety?
If we're going to do this whole "1 child is too many" routine then why aren't we focused on other areas of concern as well, where we see more children being lost in situations that are preventable? We run with news reports that appeal to emotion and then we have people throwing rocks through windows. It's absurd.

Serious question
Which kills more kids annually, pit bulls or hot cars?

in your parents' case this seems to be true.

Yeah because there wasn't a follow-up to that in the OP. You're either too retarded to not understand that there was additional text in the OP, or you're too retarded to have comprehended what was written in the OP. Which is it?

Roger, I know that in Juneau, 75 is "hot" - we have different issues with heat down here below the Manson-Nixon line.
Oh, I've lived there. In fact my two daughters were small when I lived in La. I get the issue.
My problem is zero tolerance. Like leaving them for a couple of minutes while you run in a convenience store.

For few minutes? I don't see a problem. When I was a child in Florida and Louisiana my parents would leave me in the car for a quick dash into the bank/store/whatever.
But it truly needs to be a few minutes, unfortunately there's always some dumbass who goes into the store, gets distracted and it turns into half an hour or more.

Couple of summers ago I had an old hag call the cops on me at Rouses bc I left my dog in my car. I had ran I side to get hamburger buns and left my car running with AC full blast for her.
ETA: this was in Mandeville. Would not suggest leaving a car running and leave it in Nola.

You know all those fancy child locks? They work. Probably killed this kid.
Really? Maybe if this was a special Ed kid. Or an extremely hard sleeper, very questionable. A normal 11 year old is smart enough to get out of a child locked car...climb over the seat and go out front door.
Some of you make this complicated. If you leave your kid in a parked vehicle when it's hot out, leave the ac running, and lock the doors if you're going into somewhere for a little while. Or crack the windows if they're old enough, but I would not wait in a vehicle without ac, so I don't expect my kids to. Otherwise, take your kids in with you.
Those are basically the only options and in neither case is your child in danger.
If you leave your kid in a "hot car" situation, you're a dumb frick, especially if you forget them.

We have people pretending that 11 year old are toddlers. It's bizarre.
I had my mom working with me on algebra after school as an 11 year old so I could get ahead. If you're a fully functioning 11 year old that can't open a car door then that's a wrap for you. It's over.

Maybe, but she was definitely a carrier.

Because it's so easy to take them out and not even have to worry about it.
As far as the other "dangers", I take precautions for that as well. When my kid is with me I take more notice of things like reverse lights being on or off when walking behind a car. I look around the parking lot for cars more often. When I typically would walk out of a grocery store and just expect a car to stop, I now don't cross until they are definitely stopping. It's a little more inconvenient, but that kid is my responsibility and I just take their safety more serious then my own I guess.
I'm not quite a helicopter parent. I want him to scrape his knees, get his bumps and bruises, etc. doing things that kids do. But I don't cut corners with the legit things when he's with me just to save myself a minute or two.

I hate to say it but Pecker is right.
The hot car issue is ridiculously overblown.

i don't see how it can possibly overblown.
your number one priority as a parent should be your child's welfare. i bet, these folks who leave their kids in the car for "just a few minutes" remembered to bring their precious phone with them.
