Is the "kids in hot cars" thing really a problem?

Why is this a thing? Why are you now looked at like a murdering psychopath if you leave you kids in the car for 10 minutes while you run inside Whole Foods to grab some salmon? My sister and I were routinely left in the car as children. My mom wasn't a retard so she either cracked the windows or left the car running with the doors locked.
Now, I understand not wanting to see small babies being left alone for extended periods, but we have crazy people throwing rocks through windows to "free" 7 year olds. Like wtf is that? I've had pets before (and I also adopted two bird children) so I know what it's like to be a parent. I have to believe that you, as a parent, have everything under control because it's not my job to raise your kids. If you want to leave them in a car then so be it.
Yes, I understand that we sometimes lose children to hot cars. We also lose children to trampolines, swimming pools and slippery stairs. Where's the slippery stairs hysteria? We now have politicians trying to push for hot car legislation (Hot Car Act).
What I'm saying is, why is this just now a problem? And why the hysteria?

I think someone should leave you in a hot car.

You are a horrid person and your mom should have been locked up for child endangerment.
I think it fried your brain. Poor thing! Left in a hot car while your mom went Krogering.

No because they tell women to leave something "important" in the back seat, like their purse, so they wont forget the kid..

Did it though?

You have to be the stupidest person on the planet to "forget" you have a child in the back seat. or a meth-head.
And the shitbag society most of the country has become will make excuse for them like, people are just so busy these days trying to make ends meet. [in the voice of George Carlin] bullshite...
You're frickin stupid.

I have an iPhone app that sends me a text if the temp in the car gets above a certain level. If so, I can remotely crack the windows and get the kids some fresh air.
I get to shop or eat/drink in peace, and the kids are safe. Problem solved.

Unnecessary and ruined the troll attempt.

I think it's a valid argument on if the numbers actually reflect the hysteria.
A quick web search shows approx 35 children die per year being left in a car.
What is the number of deaths that should drive a cultural change?
My new vehicle now gives me a warning to check the back seat whenever I stop and turn off the ignition. Is this needed?
Note: I'm not saying it's not, but I think it's a valid question.

trampolines, swimming pools and slippery stairs
Because it's easily preventable by not leaving children in hot cars
Do you really need an explanation on this?
edit: didn't realize this was a Pecker thread, carry on

Because people overanalyze, over criticize and are negative about everything in the modern day. It's how people feel better about themselves.

Oops sorry, wrong kind of hot car

Those other things aren't preventable? There aren't any other preventable deaths.
Thank you for your insights

Don't get frustrated because you can't comprehend why leaving small kids in a hot car can be a problem

It's a fine in for sure. 7 year old in a car with AC is not a problem. But I have been to the grocery store and we found a ~3-4 year old crying and walking around in the parking lot. We had to walk her into the store to ask for help. Her mom just left her in the car and she started to freak out after a little bit and decided to get out and find her mom. When the mom got to her, she just brushed the whole thing off. That kid was obviously not ready for that situation even in the AC. That mom sucked.
Also picked my kid up from daycare and heard the woman at the front desk as a lady where there new younger baby was. Girl says "in the car still, it's too much of a pain to get her down and back in just to run in and pick up her son". My jaw is on the floor. I couldn't imagine leaving an infant in the car no matter what the situation. Car was running so it wasn't a heat issue, but still. What if someone decided at that moment to do a smash and grab (it's happened there before and this was a nice Mercedes). I actually sat in my car in the parking lot and watched that car until she came out. I just felt uneasy leaving a baby on it's own in the parking lot.
Now if I see a kid that probably has his own cell phone, IDGAF and go on with my life.
