M2 CS is regarded as one of the best from what I’ve read and heard. Current M3 is supposedly good but just really ugly.

2000-2010 was probably peak BMW era on the whole. They’ve lost the plot now.

It is a badass car and one of the last that really "was a bmw". They called themselved "The ultimate driving machine" and it really was.

Not a lot of "ultimate driving machines" rolling off the BMW lots these days. Bunch of lame SUV's and electric cars, all slathered with //MM badges.

hot take - the //M badge means f*** all these days. They put it on anything wiht a bmw logo.

E46 was a great car. I had one in 5 speed and loved it. Seriously would consider buying another if I could find low miles.

BMW mechanic friend of mine swore by the E46 and E39. Said they would run forever as long as you managed gasket leaks...He said marked decrease after the 46.

I've been considering a manual 2012 550i.

I love my 2018 M2 and it's widely considered the most fun BMW being made right now.

The M2 is kind of the last remainder of the BMW golden years. I read something recently that kind of rang true, they've moved on from being an engineering company to a marketing company. Still, the M2 is a hell of a car.

The 1M from the early 2010's was pretty fantastic as well.

I used to have a Z3 M Coupe (the clown shoe), maintenance was getting to be a pain since I wasn't driving it much anymore. Kids and life in general kept getting in the way, so I unloaded it. Anyway, have had a chance to drive some more recent BMW's and excluding the M2, and the 1M, I'd prefer the old Z3 M. Granted, I'm pretty biased.

Great driver. I'd stay away from the xDrive models. That said, a 10 year old BMW is going to be a bit needy. You probably know that, but still it needs to be said. Godspeed if you end up with a cooling system issue that are common with those models.

Im going to drive my 18 M2 until the last year model of the new 23 M2 comes out, hopefully they do another CS version that should be just stupid considering the new specs on the 23 M2. It will be the last BMW car you can get manual from everything said.

Hopefully they either fix some styling by then, or there will be pleanty of body kits to choose from.

I had a 2003 in Titanium Silver, 7-speed manual - one of the few cars I've had over the years that I wish I had just kept. What a great drive that car was, and it was indeed the last BMW I've ever owned. Got rid of it in 2011 for an E63 AMG Mercedes - the last model year with the big naturally aspirated V-8. Had about 100 more HP than the M5 and much more in the way of amenities, but nowhere near the driver's car that E39 beast was.

The only thing I thoughT was a little cheesy about it was the seating surfaces - most of the interior was black leather, but the seating surfaces had a grey ostirch print that I never loved. It did have the extended leather for all teh dash and door surfaces which was excellent. I put a short throw shifter on it that was butter. I also DIY retrofitted it with a BMW bluetooth module and it was the first car I had phone BT on. Worst cup holders in history, lol.

I had a brand new 2003 E46 M3 Imola Red 6-Speed. Was the best car I ever owned and I'm sad that I didn't keep it.

Man, what do you graduate to after going E46 M3 to E63 AMG?

The E63 was a lease - turned it in and bought a CPO Range Rover Sport which was a good vehicle and drove until warranty was done then bought a Cayenne S which I don't see myself switching from. Great cars, reliable, comfortable, capable - hard to beat from an SUV.

Saw a project the other day where some dude took his Cayenne Turbo S and did a custom coilover kit, among other things, and has it riding on 35s

Love that car!

Makes me wish the new 911 Dakar wasn't impossible to get.

Great car. They still make great cars. Have had a few e90s and now an f22. The M240i and the new M2 are incredible. The Supra is made by BMW and it’s a hell of a car to drive. Not to mention the M550i and the M5. They make outstanding performance cars.

Which motor was in the RR Sport? Any major issues with that vehicle? I might need to re think my family car game with kids on the way. I’m really into the Jaguar XF S Sportbrake which has the supercharged V6, bit of a unicorn car. I’m thinking RR had a V8 for the Sport so probably can’t comment to the overall reliability.

Love the E46, that's the only competition IMO. Just partial to the M5 due to what they were able to do with a sedan, there's something about the long wheelbase that does it for me. Plus the best wheels BMW ever produced.

Definitely one of their best. Chrome shadow or shadow chrome was what they called the finish, if I recall. That car burned through tires and brakes (maybe it had to do a bit wtih the driver as well)

Mine was naturally aspirated V-8, 5.0L, if I recall. The major issue with that engine was timing chain guides, but mine never had a failure. Toward the end of the time I had it, I thought it sounded almost like a diesel with a bit of a "clickity-clack", but never found anything at the shop I used. I never had issues with it other that normal consumables that I can remember. I know the rep is bad, but we owned that and a 2013 LR4 that we still own (one of my kids drives it) that has 150K miles and has been a workhorse and trouble free (I think it has that same big 5.0L NA V8 that my RR sport had.
