Coast guard has the GOAT helicopter livery. I see their MH-65s fly over my house weekly, always fun to go outside and watch them fly over

considering pararescue and cc training I would agree that they might be a little off put by that statement

I knew a guy who said he was former pararescue. Turns out he got booted from whatever their AIT is and didn't make it 4 months.

Cops/swat teams are pretty badass too but they aren't military. Where does it stop???

Its just like all the other branches. They have your run of the mill MOSes and very few Special Operations folks that are pretty outstanding and are trained in a ton of stuff. We always had a few around and they were high speed.

Is the Coast Guard neglected as a military branch?

Watched a documentary once that said Air Force Paramilitary-rescue was the most exclusive special forces unit in the military and had the highest training dropout rate. These are the guys they send to back-up, and if needed, rescue other special forces units.

I think I read somewhere that the CG only takes recruits over six feet tall.
Or maybe it was all a dream....
My favorite local Coastie story:
Commercial Shell dredging stopped in Lake Ponchartrain in 1990. This cessation allowed the native sea grasses to come back and filter the Lake's water allowing water clarity levels not seen in the Lake since the 1930's. The newly clear water allowed everyone to see the old lead acid batteries dumped overboard at the base of all the lighted Aids to Navigation all around and amidst the Lake. That is because the very folks charged with maintaining the Lake's cleanliness (the USCG) were lazy, dumb and long-term polluters.
Lead Batteries? Really?

For doing safety checks on boats in Venice?

When storms shut down entire ports, they go out.
When hurricanes ground the United States Navy, they go out.
And when the holy Lord himself reaches down from heaven and destroys his good work with winds that rip houses off the ground . . . They. Go. Out.

Whut?..... They get put on weather holds just like everyone else. They may take a few more risks than some, but that is in their job description.

My father served in the Coast Guard for thirty years. He was an aviator the vast majority of that time. He was stationed in Alaska, Guam, Florida, Michigan, California, Massachusetts, and Louisiana.
I've heard his stories. They would freeze your blood.
If you tell CG aviators his first name, they know who he is.
He is a hero.

It was reported in the T-P in either 1991 or 1992. Call Rickey Mathews about it, they'll look it up for a charge.
