Is the Chalmette Battlefield worth visiting if passing through New Orleans?

I'm a huge history and National Park Service person, but I can never tell if any landmark in the New Orleans area is worth visiting with the way people on this board talk about the place.

Without a doubt. It’s very close to Rocky’s. Knock out two places in one trip. Check Rocky’s hours before going.

Drive through the ninth ward if you want to see a current battlefield.

Or just a bunch of overgrown empty lots

Yes. It is worth it and free. You can drive thru it and step out to read the markers.

Damn I was too late on a 9th ward battlefield joke

This for sure. Grab a daiquiri and this makes for a fine afternoon.

Also check out Fort Macomb and Fort Pike. I’m not sure if you can still tour Pike, but they are still cool to see.
Both were coastal defense fortifications built before the civil war to defend against ships trying to attack New Orleans by way of Lake Pontchartrain.
Hop on the Chef Menteur Hwy (US 90) and drive it from east NOLA into Mississippi (or vice versa)

Both are closed to the public. Macomb is in terrible shape and the state closed down Pike because they poor.
But I've seen True Detective, so I know what Macomb looks like.

I knew Macomb was closed. They only use it for movie sets nowadays. Pike was open years ago when I visited but the recent hurricanes screwed that up.

Chalmette . . . worth visiting
Doesn't check out

Absolutely. Actually did my Eagle Project at the National Cemetery there ~2003. The park has been updated quite a bit since Katrina.

Yes you should. Make sure to visit the national cemetery as well. It makes for a quick visit and there is nothing like being at the exact spot your country turned away an invading army.

Yes, but would recommend going when it isn't too hot.

I’ve said this here before, but in the 20’s my grandpa grew up right next to the battlefield. His family leased it for their dairy farm. They found all kinds of cool shite apparently.

Yeah, but technically, the British were no longer invading and were headed home. Unfortunately for them, nobody shooting at each other knew that.
