The FDA already requires that sugar content is listed on the nutrition facts label.

not a drug but not that great for you either. This is American and we are free to consume almost anything we desire.

Sugar is in everything. The recommended amount per day is only like 25g.

Pure sugar isn't as bad as Palm Oil or HFCS.
Sugar is just expensive and it gets the blame instead of the others.

Here in the greatest and most fit city in America we tax sugary beverages in an attempt to keep the fatties from further harming themselves. Maybe we can do it for all sugary food and drink eventually. Not only do we tax the shite out of it, but we use the extra revenue in a constructive and purposeful way
From the city website:
From the city website:
quote:
revenue will be spent on health promotion, general wellness programs and chronic disease prevention that improve health equity, and other health programs especially for residents with low income and those most affected by chronic disease linked to sugary drink consumption

1). You would have to be very poor to pass on a beverage because of a small tax
2). It's a money grab
3) it's big brother, the nanny state and regressive/backward
Congrats on being the new prudes.

It definitely should. We've been fighting the wrong war against fats instead of sugar this entire time.

How about you eat as much as you want, and I'll eat what I want.
The same people that say this are the same people complaining about health insurance being too high. Not even realizing that they have a direct correlation.
The more fat people there are = the more health care will cost for everyone.

My southern family passed on sodas at Mountain Sun during Christmas because they were $4.50 and instead opted for waters. They aren't rich but definitely not poor. I watched it work with my own eyes

The people voted for this measure and I really do not believe it is some bullshite money grab. There is plenty of money to go around here, and plenty of programs offered by the city for free that seem to indicate the money is indeed going where we think (for the most part at least)

Let's make cars limited to 30mph, outlaw all carbohydrates, weed, booze, cigarettes, sports...

Sugar is the one thing that the feds will keep in high use in this nation. Regulated sugar use would hit big pharma in the pockets really hard. And this is not anything new. The FDA is one of the major harms to us.

It's a typical bandwagon, knee jerk, feel good measure hung over the heads of economically ignorant people by money grubbing administrators.
It hurts merchants and poor people but opens great black market OPs

I never said we need to regulate everything. I'm just saying that the mindset that "this is america and if I want to supersize my meal then I can" is dangerous because it affects everyone else. And the irony is the same people that have that mindset are complaining about health insurance being too high.
Also, car insurance is low in plenty of states and they don't limit their cars to 30 mph. They just have less shitty drivers. Kinda like how I am saying it'd be nice if we'd be less fat. Booze and cigarettes are already regulated to a certain extent. Don't really get why you put weed, carbs or sports in there.

The only real addiction I've ever dealt with in life is my addiction to sugar. I must have at least one sweet food item a day.

We're fatter, yet live longer than ever.
The better approach is to subsidize healthier behavior.

And yet life expectancy in the US is ranked somewhere between 30th and 50th if I remember correctly.

Not against this idea at all.

The problem is "we" subsidize the worst foods. Either take away subsidies completely or subsidize fruits and vegetables instead of grains/corn and simple sugar crops.
