More common up north than in the south, that's for sure.
It's all need based. We get crappier weather up here and need more rugged vehicles to handle that on a daily basis.

We just bought a Subaru Legacy, and live in the Albuquerque area. There are tons of Subarus here. But it makes sense, my wife wanted something comparable to our Jetta TDI that was AWD as to handle the winter weather.
You can't beat the reliability and AWD for the price point.
ETA: And yes, we are very white.

We have an Outback. Great car although I'm not sure why people south of I-40 need a car that only comes with four wheel drive.

I was at a four way stop the other day in Durango. At the other stop signs were three identical Subaru Outbacks. Same color and everything. There are Subes everywhere out here.

That's how it is here. My primary vehicle is another common "mountain town" car, a Honda Element. My SO drives an old arse Subaru that still drives like a champ.

Subaru is the most reliable vehicle. My Outback is amazing.
