The campus is fine, the area of town immediately surrounding it is not great but not horrible either. I would say it isn't much worse than what is between LSU and Government street.
The campus is actually quite safe and the river views are pretty awesome.

It really is a shame such a terrible part of town is on the nicest place on the Mississippi River in the state.

This, but another mile from campus and you're in a worse warzone than, well, half a mile north of LSU.

Stay downtown and drive up to Southern, less than 10 minutes away and there are two ways to get to Southern (I-110 and River Rd/Scenic). If you run out of stuff to do downtown during the weeknights(which you will), starting at about 6PM traffic in the rest of BR will start to clear up and you can get anywhere you need to without much trouble.

Yes. The worst, but the view from Scott's Bluff is fabulous at sunset.

I know you're being sarcastic, but the picnic area down past the art sculpture is quite nice.
We used to go drink at the picnic tables at night. One of the best views od the river in the baton rouge area.

The university is not located in an upscale environment by any means. I stay around college drive and commute to SU. The Mississippi River view is quite relaxing and offers the best aesthetic to what SU really represents
If I had to stay in a dorm, I would be okay with that. The university itself is very safe.
Take precautions when outside of campus. But overall as long as you are not looking for trouble, you will be OK.
